Got a Deltapoint put on my M&P9

Bought a S&W M&P 9mm. Bought it from G&R Tactical and it’s very convenient how you can just buy APEX stuff at the same time and have them install it for you. Had them put in the DCAEK and RAM. The trigger’s not as good as on my XD or P30 (which have been worked over by Springer Precision & Grayguns) but considering it’s a kit it’s pretty close and is quite good. Big improvement over the stock M&P trigger.

I then took the slide and shipped it off to One Source Tactical to have them mill it down to accept a Leupold Deltapoint. Also had them refinish the slide in OD Green. While they were working on the slide I had a local gunsmith stipple the grip and add a couple reference spots for my weak hand thumb and trigger finger.

Just picked the frame up yesterday. The guy did a good job IMO. I had ordered a holster from Atomic Dog holsters that will fit the gun with it’s taller sights but it won’t be done until a couple weeks from now.

Excited to get it to the range and put it through it’s paces.

It was hard to photograph the reticle to make it look how it actually does (a triangle)…most of my attempts make it look like a dot but i was able to get one that looked good.

I’ll be interested to read your range reports. If you don’t mind, what was the cost for the DeltaPoint + slide machining + install?

380 for the deltapoint (bought from reddotscopes.com), 235 for the milling/mounting, 75 for the taller iron sights that cowitness

Looks good, hope the range report goes well.

any reason why you chose the BUIS in front of the dot?

Very cool,
looking forward to range reports.
What’s the finish?

I had the rear buis placed there cause I didn’t want to obstruct the view looking into the deltapoint.

The finish is norrel moly resin

It’s neat to see after 8 years of running these types of set ups and designing many ways to run them with back up sights how many people and companies have directly copied all my designs for the optics use on defensive handguns. I just goes to show how viable the idea truely is. I think someday soon we will be seeing more pistols from the factories coming optics ready. Smith & Wesson L.E. division even had me build them a full house M&P with a Deltapoint and BUIS which they had as a primary display gun at this years SHOT show. We are on the verge of a great new step in fighting handguns.
Enjoy the new blaster I am sure you’ll love it.

I was about to comment on this when I saw this post. Front sight in front of the optic has been David’s idea all along. In fact, you can find Mr. Suarez’s post on this site criticizing it. Yet, it seems like it is popular enough for OneSource to copy the design.

Yeah OST gives you the option to put it in either place (although they make note that in back is “preferred”)…after reading through both lines of reasoning of where to place it though I decided I liked the argument for it in front of the sight better.

The email contact I had with OST (most of which was with Mark who’s the one that did the actual work) was good. No complaints there.

I recognize that Bowie is the one that pioneered this rear sight placement (his personal guns are what made me want one of these in the first place) but for me it came down to turnaround time. Same reason I ordered an Atomic Dog holster for this gun rather then a Raven.

I would like to thank Mr. Bowie for the Deltapoint installation on my M&P45. I got it last week and it is just AWESOME. I have only put a few round through it due to work/family/weather, but I have already done MANY dry fires and I am liking what I see.

Thank you again David for the first rate work and the experience you bring to this type of shooting.

Yeah, I had mine done through OST too due to turnaround time and, in my case, I wanted the rear sight in its conventional place. Mark was in fact helpful, although I was under impression he wasn’t gunsmith. So I am not slamming OST, just giving David a credit when credit is due.

There’s two Mark’s. Mark Swain who i think runs the business side of their shop and Mark houssel(sp) who i asked technical type questions to.

You’ve got my business as soon as I decide on doing either my M&P 9mm or 45. Love the concept!

One thing I will say about this setup is it definitely “punishes” you if you don’t do a correct draw. Getting sloppy definitely results in “hunting for the dot”. Lots of dryfire practice in my future.

Thanks for kind words guys. My web site is pretty broken up these days and sometimes confusing. Someday I need to rebuild it but I am so busy teaching and building guns its hard to fit that in. My RDS mounting alone is and has been a month or less. Depending on refinish work for those who do that it can vary a bit but for the mounting i have been runnning under a month. I have also designed a rear sight that allows the rear mount of the BUIS on the Deltapoints also. I know it will be seen done by others soon as it was displayed at SHOT show and many folks were inspecting it pretty close. I have seen one done already but it was not quite correct in its design. I like to give folks a choice, but I want to make theset ups work as well as possible and that even lead to the first real BUIS on the M&P that was mounted behind the Deltapoint and RMR. Sometimes it takes a bit to get the proper set ups but I’ll keep doing what I can to do it well. Some set ups just don’t work well or just don’t fit on certain guns well. Feel free to call anytime and I’ll try to point anyone in the right direction or let them know what I have used that worked.

Thank you for the compliment.

As you said our preferred setup is rear sight behind the RMR but at customers request we will mount it in front.

Correct, I contact the TSD customers, answer their questions etc. and Mark Housel does the actual work on the slides.

As I recall, it was Kelly McCann that pioneered the idea with his Docter and Glock 19.

I have already moved an entire gunsmith shop into OST, and hired two more guys to keep up with our demand and the short turn arounds.

Ouch.

Mr. Suarez, with an attitude showing in your original post - as quoted by willowofwisp, before you edited it - you’ll lose clients, not make more money; certainly makes me regret going your route.

I understand this is business, but the way you’re coming across, it is really hard to discern whether you’re honest in your favoritism of pistol-mounted RDS, or pushing it to make a quick buck.

Well…I did change the original post as I thought it too strong.

Oh well. It reflects how I feel.

Lose customers? Well…maybe, but I doubt it. And quick it is certainly not. It costs time and effort to do it right. Maybe we both copied FN. I really don’t care.

I have a box of 50 RMRs sitting in my office with customer numbers attached to each ones. And that is simply one week’s worth of TSD sales.

By the way, I carry a TSD Glock as my EDC so I guess I believe in it.
