curious if they find out what happened, seems weird 2 people and a dog passed away over night.
carbon monoxide?
Vaya con Dios, Marine. Thanks for so many masterfully-crafted quotable moments on-screen.
RIP. Gonna have to rewatch “The Conversation”
That’s one of the few possibilities I can think of that wouldn’t involve foul play.
CO was my first thought as well. Sounds like they were there (deceased) for quite a while.
Report said the wife showed decomposition. That, and the neighbor’s welfare check call means they must have been gone for days. Gas company indicated on signs of an issue.
Yard workers reported they hadn’t seen them in 2 weeks. Both were decomposed and beginning to mummify in the extremities. The wife was found with pill bottle open and pills spilled all over the countertop (no mention of what the pills were though). One dog was dead and 2 more were alive. He was found pitched over in a “mud room” just off the kitchen, like he collapsed there. Not sure WTF happened.
I’m not sure how much tox screens are affected by decomposition but maybe some clue will turn up during autopsy.
Turns out his wife died of hantavirus, and he died of natural causes including heart disease about a week later. They say he may not have known she had passed.

Heard this today, very bizarre and sad. Dementia apparently prevented him from picking up the phone and calling for help (if he realized she was dead). Again, truly a sad situation.
I haven’t heard how the dog died, I’m guessing starvation locked in the dog crate. Sad.
That popped up often enough in news from the southwest in the 1990’s that it got mentioned in The X Files movie, maybe one of the shows too.
Man, that sounds pretty grim.
The news must be awful for the family to hear. Heart goes out to them.
The story I got from the press conference mentioned that the dog had recently spent time with the vet, having just been brought home a dayor so before they believe that Mrs Hackman passed away. So it may have been in recovery and crated. The dog is being examined and the actual cause of death hasn’t come back yet.
Sadly with Betsy’s passing no one was around to keep everyone else alive and well.
Hantavirus is found in rodent shit. I wonder if they had rodent issue at that NM house?
Gene was so senile he didn’t know she was gone for 7 days before he expired?
"I would like to die peacefully in my sleep like my uncle, not in terror like his passengers"
“Gene was so senile he didn’t know she was gone for 7 days before he expired?”
Supposedly he had advanced Alzheimer’s.
I get it, but being that bad he didn’t hire some live-in professionals?
Well his wife was 32 years younger than he was, so unless a big-time curve ball like Hantavirus comes into play it would be reasonable to assume that she would be there to care for him. I read where they were rather reclusive too.
Recluse to some extent.
So she never left the property. It would have been daunting task for her alone to care for him. He had lots of money, could of had lots of good live-in care. Makes no sense to me.
I’m surprised she died so suddenly of the Hantavirus, like didn’t even go to the hospital or call 911 because she couldn’t breathe, stuff like that. Now I believe there can be a rapid onset of pulmonary edema with Hantavirus, so maybe that’s what took her out so quickly (?). Odd situation.
