Ford's new aluminum F-150

Looks like Ford is convinced that it’ll be a winner:

If they want my money they can dump UAW to get it.

The comments on that are just precious. Ive yet to have a major (truck’s fault, not mine) issue with my 2010. (Bought it new.)

Living in AZ and having to have your piece of shit Ford’s A/C get major repairs 3 times in under 90k miles will cure you of buying their garbage ever again.

I’m not just Anti Ford… If you held a gun to my head and said you have to buy an American made piece of shit, I’d probably settle on the lesser of the evils and buy an F150. If any of the big 3 could put a vehicle together that didn’t fall apart after the warrantee expired, I’d pinch my nose and look the other way on the fat union slobs piece of it. But that’s not going to happen.

It’s time for a new truck and for a moment I thought about ford, then my common sense came back.

Every gmc my family has had over the years made it to 100k without any major problems. The Yukon I have now has never had anything wrong but the seat warmers that stopped at 101k.

Every ford we have has on the other hand has had major issues, I remember at one point a new expedition lost the entire wheel while my dad was going 70 on the highway.

My wife wanted an explorer, and in at least convinced her to lease it instead of being stuck with that thing. Just dealing with ford gives me a headache. Then, with only 300 miles on the SUV the tire blew out while she was on the highway, ford refused to do anything, apparently bumper to bumper excludes tires.

Never again. There is a reason they rank so low on overall quality.

People have then and love them, my experience over the last 20 or so years has been so bad i can’t understand how.

The aluminum is a novel idea, but since many people have reported, which coincides with my first hand observations, that their mpg estimates are heavily inflated… I would look in a different direction.

It will be new truck time in the next year or so and I’ll take a look at these. I’ve always had good luck with Ford/Mercury products. My current Ranger has 206,000 miles, the one before it had 197K when we traded it for the wife’s explorer. The Explorer had 202K miles when we traded it for her Mountaineer that currently has 203K miles. She’ll get a new vehicle first, but wants something smaller this time; probably an Edge.
All I’ve ever had to do is basic maintenance; oil changes, tires, brakes etc.

West Texas desert is rather shitty too. Never had an A/C issue here.

My experiences with Ford trucks and SUVs was not very good. It seemed as if things crapped out way too early, compared to the same parts on my trucks made by Chevy or Toyota. A/C, water pumps, fuel pumps and things like that all crapped out way before 100k miles on both of our Fords. We also had hell, keeping the front ends aligned.

I have owned several GM and Toyota trucks and they seem MUCH better built than Ford’s offerings. In fact, the full size trucks are probably the only thing GM does right.

My current 2012 GMC Denali 2500 has been stellar. The 6.6 Duramax is an amazing motor and gets good mileage for a 3/4 ton truck.

I also ran two Tundras well over 200k miles and they never saw the shop…ever.

I’d stick to Chevy/GMC or Toyota for a quality pickup.

Agreed. I was holding out for a duramax in a 1/2 ton. I may be stepping up to the 2500 for that reason.

My experience has been the opposite. My family has owned mostly Fords for the last 25 years. Most have been very good, with some issues here and there. We’ve also owned a few GM and Chrysler products, and had poor luck with those. I’ll never buy a Chrysler/Dodge/Fiat product again.

My current F150 has been excellent, where as the GMC I had previously had several issues with it. Personally, I think much of the issue people have with their vehicles come from the dealers. The GMC dealer I dealt with on the several problems I had with my Duramax did their best for me, while other dealers I’ve been around were useless.

My 05 F150 was a pretty good truck, mostly. Had constant issues with a soft not very confident brake pedal and as Mark said, the A/C just was not up to snuff. And Arizona is way hotter than Illinois. Overall I liked the truck. Hauling 3 kids in it was a challenge which is why we now have a Suburban for me and an Acadia for the tall roommate. My big question about an all aluminum body is durability. I beat the shit out of the steel bed on my truck. I can only imagine aluminum.

I’ve been eyeing this truck. As for durability it’s supposed to be made out of the same aluminum as the Humvee and I never saw any durability problems with those trucks.

Also. Last year one of the race teams in the Baja 1000 used a new aluminum bodied truck and the new 2.8 Ecoboost motor. The truck mare the race without breaking down and the body held up fine.

Your AR is aluminum, how does it hold up? This truck is going to be a huge success.

There’s millions of these trucks out there. A few examples don’t mean anything.

I’m not saying it’s not going to be a huge success, Ford makes a nice rig. And there is a world of difference between an AR and a truck. You can test something to death but until you put it on the street, be it a gun, a plane or a car, and let the morons loose on it, you don’t know how it will do.

I have owned an 08 F150 and a 98 F150; I still have the 98 and have and had no issues with either one. I will never own another truck but a Ford, with the exception of a Tacoma for a small truck. When I was young my step dad bought a (I believe 97/98) Chevy 1500 and we didn’t even have that thing but maybe a year. It was a piece of sh*t. I have looked at the new offerings from GM and Chrysler as far as trucks, and would never want to own one. Horrible quality interiors, corners were cut everywhere from the cheap plastic to the crappy door hinges. Not to mention the abomination of terrible electronic issues GM has had since the early 90’s and Chrysler’s crap transmissions.

Ford > The rest.

Exactly, my experience compared to millions out there, and visa versa with others on their GM/Chryslers/Ford/Toyota/Nissan etc…means little. You can find just as many for as against.

Only problems I see are that body repairs are going to cost a fortune. But that’s what insurance is for. F150s have had aluminum hoods for years and they have held up well.

I’ve had good luck with ford trucks. Chevy and dodge, not so much. I’m not a flag waving ford guy, but I do think they’re at the top of the the list when considering any of the big 3. Seems like their quality jumped ahead of everyone in 08. If I were buying a half ton, I’d probably buy a toyota though.

I know three people that have that V6 Eco Boost motor in an F-150. They do NOT get anywhere near the mileage that Ford claims they do. Mostly around 14-15mpg in the city.

My 6.6 duramax 4WD GMC gets 18-18.4mpg around town…by way of comparison.

If you were looking at an F-150, I’d go for the 5.0 V8. That has been a solid motor for the Mustang and should do fine in the F-150.

American car makers do not have a great track record of gas turbo charged motors and I don’t think that twin turbo V6, pulling around a full size crew cab 4x4 pickup will probably not last very long.
