I’ve been thinking of getting one but I was wondering how bad the muzzle flash from the bare barrel is. Is it significantly worse than using a AK with a slant brake?
I used my SLR-106FR in the Hackathorn - Vickers Low Light I class last year.
AK-74 muzzle brake
Barnaul 62 gr. FMJ
Flash was more pronounced than a 16" AR using similar ammo with an A2 flash suppressor, but it wasn’t the great pumpkin size ball of flame that I expected.
The Bulgarian flash suppressor that looks like a copy of the old M60 GPMG flash suppressor is better, but still not as good as the A2.
Why are you wondering from a bare barrel?
How about the CR variants? I’m thinking of getting one and having SBR’d but, in the meantime, I’m wondering if running one in a low light course would eliminate night vision for the entire class and/or county.
Buzz,
I picked up my 107CR this weekend, and plan on getting it to the range next weekend. With it getting dark so early this time of year, I’ll try to report back and maybe see if I can get pics/video for you. I’m mildly concerned about the same thing, at least until I can talk myself in to SBRing ![]()
I haven’t had the chance to look at one, but I was wondering if the barrel could be threaded for a flash suppressor. It would look a wee bit off in appearance, but it would do the trick.
I must be missing something.
What is likely missing is my ability to type coherently today. I’d meant to ask initially about the CR variants of the 106 and 107 and the muzzle flash that one can anticipate from the lack of any muzzle device (beyond the fake Krinkov break). If I were to get one and not go the SBR route immediately, I was wondering if the muzzle could be threaded so as to take a flash suppressor, muzzle brake, or other device to mitigate the flash.
Buzz, the full size rifles have a front sight that slips over the muzzle with a 24mm RH twist, that come with an AK-74 style muzzle brake, or you can install the Bulgarian flash suppressor.

The CR models have a 16" barrel that you can get an extended “krink” style brake for that is better than a bare muzzle.
You could certainly thread the muzzle, but I think you’d be better off SBR’ing it.
Anything’s possible I guess, but if I were going to spend the money, I’d put it toward SBR’ing it and using a proper AK-104(?) type setup.
He’s concerned with the flash from bare muzzle on the CR rifles, because the fake slip-over hider doesn’t have any functionality…
Unless you’re saying you don’t understand why he’s worried about it.
I’m going on on a limb here, but I’d imagine the muzzle flash is pretty much the same as it would be with a slant brake. I don’t figure the slant brake does much of anything to mitigate flash.
Buzz,
Just buy one already!
Oh, I know. I’ve got a couple of that style. But as I indicated to The_Katar, I made an error in the title and left off the variant I was asking about. I’d hoped to just play that off but between you and he, my failure has been exposed. ![]()

I’m getting to that point. Unfortunately, I missed out on the sole one RSR had before they bumped the price to just shy of $1,000.
I have a 107Cr that had a bog flash from the bare barrel. I had Parabelluminc cut the barrel down and permanantly install an AK USA long flash hider to make it legal length. I cut down on the recoil impulse and eliminated a big protin of the flash.
Here’s a pic:

Just take the brake off one of your other rifles, and shoot it bare, it should be a pretty good indicator of what the CR will be like ![]()

I got mine from Uber Arms before the price went up, though it was the “last one they expect for a while”.
