FNH SCAR or Steyr AUG A3?

I have a bit of income tax refund and a huge overtime check coming, so it is time to get something new. I already have 3 AR15s, so I am looking at getting either a SCAR or Steyr Aug. I found a SCAR for around $2500 and the Steyr is $1900. I know the Steyr is 1/9 barrel and the SCAR is 1/7. Looking for some input and no, it can’t be both ot them. It is one or the other. Thanks for responding.

Can’t really lose either way. I’d also include the MSAR in your comparison. I have both the Steyr and MSAR rifles, both are good to go. There are some incredible deals on the last gen MSARs out there. You could find a railed MSAR, 10 30rd or 42rd mags, a case, a surefire flashlight and $1000 optic on the rifle for the price of the SCAR.

Food for thought

I might consider compatibility of the magazines, if you already set up for AR’s the SCAR does have an advantage, specially with the AUG magazines going for $40-50.
But a Steyr would be great to have too.

I was shopping for a couple weapons with my tax return and they had both instock but I passed on both. Not a SCAR fan.

SCAR was $2199
Steyr was $1850

I would go with the Steyr.

I went with the KRISS and modified Colt 6940 and didnt look back. Downside was the KRISS ran me $3000+ and the Colt ran me $2000+. :frowning:

Steyr AUG/A3 for me…as soon as I find time to mail my check. I’ll probably get a NATO stock to complement it and increase versatility.

The SCAR is hot, no doubt, but it’s basically a piston AR for all intents and purposes. Very cool, but I want something different, and I think the SCAR has a ridiculously high sight plane.

If the triggers have not improved on the the more recent AUGs’ …

Go with the SCAR.

Here’s what I liked about the SCAR. If you’re an AR user, the mag release, safety, and other controls will feel very familiar. I sat in front of the TV with mine and fiddled around with the controls for a while and instantly ‘took’ to the gun (of course, with the exception of the reciprocating CH). I felt very comfortable with it and everything was instinctive. The recoil is very manageable and I loved the folding stock.

The problem that I had (YMMV!) is that I felt the SCAR was not worth the premium over ARs. (YMMV again, it is a great gun in its own right [sincere apologies to Seinfein =X]). In all fairness, I sincerely regret selling the SCAR.

I recently bought an MSAR E4 (takes AR mags) for about $1300. To be honest, setting it up took a bit of tweaking, and the polymer parts felt ‘rough’ and unfinished. To eject Pmags I had to really punch the mag release, otherwise, I couldn’t get the mag out. Pulling the charging handle was somewhat rough and uneven too. (To be fair, the Steyr is probably much smoother).

While my 16" MSAR is very compact, its controls are not that instinctive. Going ‘high sally’ involves really dropping the stock down, mag changes require the reloading hand to remove the mag, and I really wish the safety was thumb activated (instead of using the firing finger to disengage the safety). In addition, mounting a light requires some creative finagling.

What I do love about it is that it is a different design. All the weight’s closer to the axis (your body) so it feels more maneuverable, and it’s easy to aim one handed. Finally, the gun is very easy to strip down, and can fit inside a backpack with the barrel removed (with the weapon able to instantly be reassembled).

Full Disclosure I have not had a chance to really run my MSAR through it’s paces, and i’m not a high speed super-experienced guy, so YMMV. Take my relatively uneducated opinion with a grain of salt!

Just curious, what about the scar don’t you like, you have posted in every scar thread it seems your dislike but never a reason? Another quote of yours from another scar thread"Not to be a jerk but I dont get the hype with this rifle? Whats wrong with a nice Colt or Noveske AR15 VS this?" Just seems funny, I agree they are a little pricey but I absolutely love mine. Between the scar and Aug, I have one and have shot both. The Aug is nice but for me the bullpup would take some getting used to, NOT knocking it, I just have always shot AR’s and because of that the scar was more natural to me.

Send me your MSAR E4 stock and let me take care of the mag release issue. I will receive it and ship it out the same day.

I vote SCAR

I was trying to make this decision about a month ago. When the ACR price debacle hit, I was left trying to decide what to spend my ACR fund on. The choice for me was get an AUG A3 or save for awhile and get the SCAR.

This is what I went with:

I couldn’t be happier about the decision. I think it is an amazing rifle. It fits me like a glove, and I can see it replacing my 6920 as my goto rifle once I get alittle more practiced with it.

That said, I would still like to get either a SCAR or ACR in a year. But I want to let them both mature alittle bit more before dropping that much coin. The ACR will no doubt have teething problems that will need to get worked out, and there are rumors that the SCAR will undergo more revisions. I will assess both in a year or so, and decide on one or the other then…

…For now my AUG and Colts will keep me busy

BR870, thanks that is exactly what I needed to hear. I have seen some posts on other forums that FNH is going to do some revisions. For right now, I’m going with the AUG A3.

Thanks to everyone for responding. Once I have the rifle set up and worked out, I will post some pictures and a range report.

Glad to help!

Damn good customer service!

However, the stiff mag release was rectified with a hit of silicone. Thanks much!

I have a Scar , pre- ban green 20 barrel inch Aug and the 16 inch barrel Aug A3 . If you want a REALLY short door kicker , the Aug A3 is very short . It looks and feels like a NFA SBR. It always works but is a little short in the accuracy dept. If you want a really accurate weapon that works 100% as well, buy the SCAR . The Scar is more expensive and larger . You cant go wrong with either choice . Please don’t let someone talk you into buying a MSAR unless you want to test the company’s customer service with sending your rifle in to get fixed. Some guys luck out and get one that works from the get go and alot of folks don’t . If you decide to get a Aug type weapon , buy the real deal and be done with it. Just my .02 and good luck to you.

As others have said, can’t go wrong with either.

I’d probably lean a bit more towards the AUG A3.

Don’t get your feelings hurt.

I vote SCAR. Ive never liked bullpups and the AUG and MSAR just feel cheap to me. And whats up with the toy gun trigger on the AUG/MSAR?:smiley:

If it is between the two choices listed, without any doubt or hesitation the SCAR; otherwise, just get a good quality, mid-length gas system DI AR15…

There really isn’t a test here with regards to MSAR customer service. Jagd even posted in this thread to support the issue that was mentioned. Are you speaking from a first hand negative experience? I have 3 of their weapons at this point and all worked out of the box and did not require any customer service. I have an AUG A3 as well, with no issues.

It goes back to the purpose of the rifle and in this case, it sounds like somone expanding their collection looking for something a little different to enjoy. MSAR and Steyr both make a quality product and the AUG style platform is something I hope everyone has a chance to experience at some point.

The first time you take one apart is just one of those things I guess you have to be a gun geek to enjoy. It just makes sense on the inside. I love my HKs as well, but I still remember taking the bolt carrier out of my 91 the first time and then trying to figure out how to get it back in the rifle with the rollers locked out and thinking, WTF???
