First time NVG purchase questions

I am thinking of getting a pair on NVG goggles/monocle primarily just to get acquainted with the equipment and see if that’s something that works for me.
Never having bought any, I am wondering about the following:

  1. When I buy NVG, how can I ensure they are not stolen property? Do certain models are GOV only?
  2. Do most NVGs have manufacturer’s warranty especially if I buy used. What do I need to look out for if buying used?
  3. What is the recommended brand/model to buy? I am looking at 2.5-3k budget. So far, I am thinking PVS-14 from TNVC. Are there other recommended vendors?
  4. I am also thinking of getting “civilian legal” weapon laser. So far DBAL I2 seems the only option. Anything I need to know how it may interface with the NVG?
  5. Anything else I overlooked/need to know? Besides TNVC, are there other places thav have no light training/classes?

Thanks.

Ask for receipts or other proof of purchase, intact serial #'s with manufacturer’s labels. PVS-14’s, PVS-7’s and PVS-15’s are common mil-spec units.

Data sheet would give you an idea of tube quality; other than normal common sense that goes with buying expensive equipment. Caveat Emptor- Number of hours on tube, if its ever been replaced or repaired. Dark spots in the tube, any damage to the housing that would indicate heavy use/abuse to the NVG’s.

Quality Gen 3 will cost in the ballpark of a minimum of $2800 new, if you have $3k to spend on just the NOD’s you’d be better off buying new rather than used. Think of NV as a complete system to include a way to mount it to your weapon or to a helmet/head harness. Try Larry from Own The Night; easy to communicate with and great service.

There have been reported battery drain issues with the DBAL I2; I have the 1st generation Class 1 OTAL and although slightly under powered it works well.

I’ve taken the No Light Skill Builder and No Light Operations class from LMS Defense; both classes were excellent.
