So I just finished my first reload for a hi point 9mm carbine my wife shoots. Would love some feed back on my load:
124gr jhp (montana gold)
5.3 gr Power pistol
Federal small pistol primer
once fired Fiocchi brass
Oal 1.074"
Factory crimp

Shot these reloads today, I am happy with results 1/2 inch groups at 80 yards. 5 shot groups. Cycled fine caught only one stove top but I am going to blame that on the brass catcher. Since these went well worked load up by another 3 grains = 5.6 gr everything else remained the same max is listed @ 5.7gr so I will hit the range tomorrow and see how my carbine likes the 5.6 gr load.:jester:
Sounds good,I don’t use Power Pistol,so not sure of the loadings for that, but if it cycles/looks good & no sighs of pressure ya should be good to go !! Its up to you,but try some Universal Clays,I use 3.8grns with a 125 grn JHP out of my G17 and it runs great,I’m sure it would cycle the Hi-point !! I think Max Load is around 4 grns, that stuff goes a long ways in 9mm cases,Titegroup is another good choice,it is a bit dirter, but hell,I loaded over 1000 rds and didn’t even use a full pound of powder,:D,Clays is Very close to that also !!
my uzi worked best with the heavies: 147 gr.
dont remember the powder though
OAL seems a bit short. I would think 1.090" to 1.10".
When you say factory crimp are you using a Lee FCD? RCBS makes seating taper crimp dies. Just curious which you are using.
I am using lees factory crimp die. I went by what my manual had listed for oal which is 1.075" Me being a Newbie I was able to achieve 1.074" uniformly so stuck with that.
Thank you for the tip may try the clay powder after I run out of power pistol.
I had a question been researching how to check for excessive pressure, I saw the flatten primer, loose prime pocket and case seperation signs is there anything else I should look for? Thanks in advance.
Ripples, post up a pick of the spent case.
What source were you looking at?
the Lyman manual was my source I will post pics first thing tomorrow.
I order some 1xfired brass from brassman pmc military brass. the necks on these things are black even after tumbling. May have made a Newbie mistake ordering these cases…
Don’t worry so much about color. I have the Lyman book so ill make sure.
Not a bad deal for decent brass. I would check Gunbroker, type in 9mm Brass & you will get Tons of hits, try and find Unpolished,it is normally cheaper !! Buy Large amounts, over 2K at least, ya normally ger better deals,it has been a few months since i bought any,but I Never paid over $25 bucks per 1K Shipped for any 9mm stuff !!! There is tons on there like I said, find some that looks good with a Good Description and a decent guarantee (for what its worth, but most guys are very fair & up front) about being once fired/from Police Ranges, etc !! Watch L(.)(.)K & be patient, don’t get caught up in the bidding, set a limit to spend,if it goes over, walk away, there are always NEW deals !!! Here is some Loading info also !

Thanks for the tip we do on my next order. The cases that I recieved which have the tarnish are 223, would it be a bad idea to use some fine steel wool to clean them or will that thin out the brass to much?
Bottleneck cartridge brass necks often darkens after firing from the annealing process. They’ll lighten but always be darker than the body.
Thank you for response.
Report on 5.6 gr of power pistol lost a little accuracy not sure why but will be dropping load to 5.5 grains under a hornady xtp for my shtf ammo. Or if anyone has a good recipe for this setup please share…
Had yet another question I have worked up my 9mm 124gr jhp /power pistol load to 5.6 gr, 1gr under max. my original col was 1.075 as per Lyman manual. I wanted to know if it would be a bad idea to load 6gr power pistol +3 gr over reccomend max with a col of 1.080. I saw this recipe for hornady 9mm xtp 124gr which I will be getting in via ups today. Hornady manual listed col @ 1.060 with the same max of 5.7 gr Power pistol. My goal here is to make shtf ammo. Please share your taughts. I had no signs of excessive pressure at 5.6 gr. This ammo is for a Hi Point 9mm 995ts carbine.
I wouldn’t do it. 9mm is a very high pressure round and I think the COLs are a bit short given what you are loading. What are you looking for that you want it loaded that way?
Is it steel knock down, plinking? What powders do you have? I use a few different in 9mm n320, n340, unique, A#7.
I checked Lyman and they agree with your measurements but still a bit short.
I am looking to make a SD round I went to max load as per Lyman manual @ 5.7 gr of power pistol col 1.060" no high pressure signs at all. However I am hoping this would do the job for an SD round. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
I think the XTP’s are a pretty sturdy bullet. Be a good hunting bullet, but I think Gold-dots are probably a better bullet for SD.
Just my uneducated opinion.
A lot of people misunderstand OAL/COL, I think Accurate’s manual states things best when it says…
SPECIAL NOTE ON CARTRIDGE OVERALL LENGTH “COL”
[i]It is important to note that the SAAMI “COL” values are for the firearms and ammunition manufacturers industry and must be seen as a guideline only.
The individual reloader is free to adjust this dimension to suit their particular firearm-component-weapon combination. This parameter is determined by various dimensions such as
(emphasis by me)
The number one purpose of OAL in an autoloading firearm is to ensure proper chambering and cycling. Treat OAL like any other component in a reload. Work up from a reduced load with a specific OAL, and then leave it be if it works fine. 1.075" is fine. Min recommended OAL for an 124 XTP for example is 1.06" and there are other JHPs with even lower minimum lower OALs. Fearing minimum OAL is just as irrational as fearing max load. One might as well fear standard pressure factory ammo, which is usually at or around both to ensure proper functioning in a wide array guns.
On the subject of “Can I go over max load if I lengthen my OAL a bit?”. Well you certainly can, but that doesn’t mean you should. That being said Max load isn’t a constant and will vary from manual to manual. You say that you are at 5.7gr which is max in the Lyman manual. Alliant currently lists 6.4gr as max for power pistol with a 124gr jacketed bullet. In 2005, the last year before they completely dumbed down their load data, it was listed as 6.6. So while one poster cautioned against going over a published load, which is excellent excellent advice, that published load is conservative anyway and is well under other published maximum loads, namely the maker of the powder itself.
