I have an EOTech 512, in front of her I have a 3x EOTech Magnifier. It’s a good setup, once zeroed in she’s right on. My question is, are the Aimpoints better? I have never shot with an Aimpoint, all I know is the EOTech. It was a recommendation from a friend when I first got my M4. I basically want to upgrade…
There are a billion threads on this forum about this subject. Do a search, I personally prefer Eotech, but I will experiment with the T1 at some point next year
i prefer Aimpoint, but the EO is far from a bad red dot. its a very good CQB optic, especially when procuring batteries is not a problem.
i would try before you buy. see if you like the 2MOA or 4MOA dot. i would try out the CompC3/M3/ML3 or M4/M4s and the H1/T1.
you may find that you like “old” style sights with a cantilever mount best, or you might like the size and weight of Micro the best, you might decide you want the insane battery life of the M4…or you just may find that you prefer the EOTech for whatever reason…some people do. you may find that you like both types of sights but prefer one for a certain set of applications.
i wouldn’t buy something new just to upgrade. if you find reasons to make the upgrade worth it to you, then by all means, spend the dough, but don’t do it just because you feel like you have to. the EO is still a good unit. just run fixed (or flipped up) iron sights on it always.
Thank you for the information. I am still trying to decide which red dot to use on the new 16" middy AR. My 20" Preban has a Trijicon ACOG TA01. Which doesn’t fit the role of the new rifle. More research…
Unfortunately most of the guys I know have/use EOTechs, so I don’t have much exposure to the Aimpoints, I have to go shopping for gunshops and see what works… I suppose I need to finish the rifle first.
I’ve had my Aimpoint CompMl2 for about 3-6 months now, the dot has been “on” the entire time. I cant say anything bad about it.
I can say that no matter which you get make sure it’s mounted properly to your gun. I’ve seen 3 eotechs fall off using the factory mount from coming loose during shooting. I have my compml2 in a larue lt-129 which I really like.
I can remove it from the gun and then reattach and zero has not been changed (as long as it’s mounted in the same spot (though one rail forward or back doesnt affect it too much).
Some issues I’ve heard from others is that during a class the eotech’s windows puddled up with water while slung (was raining). It’s waterproof, but still wasn’t something they liked. That same person is also the same who installed the rds via the instructions and it came off during a drill.
I went with the aimpoint because of battery life and durability. There was a post on some board where a cop was at the range with his carbine and had laid it on the trunk, forgot it was there, and then drove off. His gun fell off on the interstate and was run over by a semi. The aimpoint was all that survived (with the larue mount). He had pictures to go with it (I will see if I can track this down)…dumb to leave it there, but it speaks volumes for the durability of it.
You have a 512, that is a good sihgt, one of the best on the market, just make sure you get some Lithium batteries for it and you should be good to go…
I have (had) 317 of them (Mod. 552) at the armory when I arrived here in Oct. 07. Of those 75 were tits up. I managed to get most back up and running with the new battery packs and repair kits I got from EOtech (thought it took 6 months to get it.). I have seen them die out here for no reason and the battery pack is a weakness. I highly suggest looking at an Aimpoint of you are serious about an RDS.
I’m on the aimpoint side of things as well. The fact that they can be left on is a big plus for me since they go on my ranch guns(since they are a grab’n go deal, not having to remember to turn the sight on is great.) Also I prefer the brightness knob on the aimpoint to buttons on the eotech since it just seems quicker and handier to use. I will admit now though that I have only played with eotechs at stores and never in person so I can’t comment much else on them.
