Ebola, Glasgow.

We haven’t had an ebola thread in a while.

One confirmed case in Glasgow.

If the transmission rate is so low when in PPE and the people treating the sick are so informed and knowledgeable about how it is transmitted and the infection rate, why is it so many leave the infected area with the virus?

Lapses in protocol. It’s easier than you think.

How many is “so many”?

What have we had as far as aid workers returning infected in the USA and EU? 10 cases? Max?

How many treat Ebola patients every month from those regions? Thousands?

I don’t have specifics, but I don’t think this is a huge issue.

People where ebola thrives live in some pretty nasty conditions. I don’t think it has any chance of spreading in a first world country (not far, anyway).

When the “Best in the Brightest” seem to bring it home once in a while, it would seem like a huge issue that they don’t have a handle on it.

Lapses can be forgiven in the field… stuff happens. They are tight on resources (gloves, masks etc) in Africa so I can understand.

But how about this faux pas from our best and brightest…

Oops doesn’t really cut it.

There has been quite a bit going on, just not being broadcast to the proles anymore. It apparently makes people jumpy and hurts bottom lines

My Ex wanted to work there, when that didn’t work out She wanted to do some more International Medical Aid.
I can appreciate the reason why many of these people go to serve, but the idea of brining this stuff home from either abroad or the lab is scary.
Now I’ve been in rooms full of these folks and as smart on one level as they may be there are more than a few “Absent Minded Professors” in ever bunch of these folks. Add to this a desire to make it home for the Holidays and I’m sure some things might be overlooked in order to make that flight.
What most of these folks do not have is oversight (as far as I can tell anyway.) If you are flying out of a “Hat Zone” I see no reason why there isn’t a 21 day isolation period just to be on the safe side. Now if you ask these people why they don’t do that they can come up with a hundred reasons why that would just be impossible.
My take on “Impossible” means it isn’t profitable in either a monetary or career progression way. Now that being said, I’m sure that shoe doesn’t fit everyone of them, but I would assure you there are sharks in those waters. Take a look at some of those folks who have been told that they were exposed and to isolate themselves. Take a look at the some of their actions while they were given a “requested” quarantine.
It isn’t all about saving some kid in Africa from Ebola, if it were then why wouldn’t they take the time an do the isolation just to make sure they don’t pass it on to some kid in Cleveland?

The researchers explored an area in southeastern Guinea where 2-year-old Emile Ouamouno fell ill a year ago and died. Health officials believe he was the first case in the epidemic, which wasn’t recognized until spring.

The Ebola virus wasn’t found in the bats they tested, the scientists reported in a study published Tuesday. But they came away believing that the boy got it from the bats that had lived in the hollow tree.

they learned that a large colony of small, smelly bats with long tails lived in a hollow tree near the boy’s home. Villagers told the researchers that the tree caught fire in March, causing a “rain of bats” to emerge from the tree.
Bats huh?
Gee these guys could have went to a used book store and bought “The Hot Zone” and learned the same thing.

Glasgow huh, well they shot there for World War Z . . . just say’n.

Ebola in a city with close contact and frequent blood and bodily fluid exposure. Hmm… I wonder how it would spread all over the UK and Europe (Like Celtic playing Inter Milan in Glasgow on Feb 19)?

. . .
