Duty weapon question.

I’m in a position where I need a new stripped upper for my duty rifle as mine is cracked and unuseable . My weapon is a Colt LE6920 I’d like to replace the upper with another Colt part but unfortunately Colt doesn’t sell the parts individually. I have found a place online selling stripped Colt uppers however they’re used, some more so than others and being that I’d be purchasing them online I really wouldn’t be able to inspect them and pick a good one. So my question is. Would it be safe to use a used stripped upper on my duty weapon bearing in mind I have no idea how harshly this thing has been treated by its previous owner or would I be better off spending MUCH more money and just buying a new complete upper from Colt?

Sorry if I rambled. Just got off a long night at work and this situation has my totally flustered. Thanks in advance for the advice all.

Buy a new flat top upper receiver, it doesn’t need to be Colt.

ETA= Glad you are ok, make sure someone goes through the rest of that weapon carefully.

I would easily trust a stripped upper rec. from a number of quality mfg’rs, however I have first hand exp. with a cpl. BCM M4 Flattop upper rec’s that actually replaced Colt stock A2 upper receivers on Colt 6520s.

See my problem is that per my rules and regs and general orders from my department it does have to be a Colt replacement. The upper and lower receivers have to be from the same manufacturer. If I could just order a new upper from anyone I’d be a happy man :frowning:

Have you tried to contact Colt? You never know.

Yeah I talked to them and they will sell me a new complete upper but not a stripped. I’m debating if getting the used stripped upper is worth saving the cash or if I should just quit being a tight ass and treat myself to the new complete upper.

Dept’s are crazy on policies like these Ive come to realize and ultimately the taxpayer I guess foots the bill for it.

At any rate, if the dept. regs stipulate a Colt is used then Specialized is always happy to charge you an arm and a leg for a colt authentic part…

Brownells has them. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=4796/Product/AR_15_M16_UPPER_RECEIVER Brownells has a law enforcement discount.

A lot of depts make their own officers pay for patrol rifles and parts if they want to carry one, so it might not be the taxpayer footing the bill. OP might just be trying to save some coin.

Just bought one yesterday, and it is the best deal going for a Colt M-4 upper

Specialized also offers a stripped upper

I carried a colt 6920 for years as a duty long gun, and have several Colts. They all have Cerro forge uppers so it would be easy to replace with an other Cerro forge (key hole) upper. I would have no problems replacing with a Vltor MUR, also.

The DEPT…good or bad has a policy.

The policy was probably put there for a reason…one of the biggest reasons (for those that make policy) is…LIABILITY.

Can you imagine the “flack” if/when your BUBBABUILT upper fails when the SHIT?

OK…so, it easy to just say that it has to be a factory built COLT (cause it matches the lower and COLT is a well known product). “Whatever.”

IMHO…

Pay the money and buy the COLT upper. Write it off in your taxes. It’s not really that big of a deal.

Course you may disagree.

And/or…you could always TRY to change the “policy.” But, good luck with that.

LOL…I can remember when we were issued revolvers and I asked why can’t we get semi auto pistols?

Hey…some policy makers just have their own ideas of whats best for us. Sort of like the Libtard/Dems in Congress. And, we have to live with both.

Aloha, Mark

PS…Story Time

OK, I had a private purchase COLT Carbine that I carried on duty. On day the rear stock got damaged/cracked (I guess I watch too many movies). Anyway…I needed a COLT part (same sort of thinking like your Dept. regulations). So, instead of buying a cheaper/better stock…well, I contacted COLT and they sold me their COLT stock for $75.

I felt like I was robbed.

But, I had complied with the regs.

I don’t think I would want to buy a used upper online without being able to examine it for my duty rifle.

If you must use Colt, then I’d go ahead and get a new upper. Write the upper off on your taxes and be done with it.

ding, ding^^^^^^^^^^.

Thanks for the input guys. I was concerned any stripped upper I found online would be used seeing as how Colt doesn’t sell parts. But a gentleman I’ve spoken with at Specialized Armament was very helpful and confirmed they’re products were all new so I’m good to go and saving several hundred bucks. This site has been more than helpful in the brief time I’ve been a member. Glad I discovered it.

I expected the Colt stripped upper to be about $100 more than it was in the Specialized link.

Ken Elmore runs a good shop. If you absolutely have to have Colt parts he is probably the best source, albeit a little spendy.

It’s too bad that you department doesn’t revisit some of their policies, though I understand where the caution comes from.

Brownells has a Colt flat top which also includes the assist & dust cover for $15 less, or $57 less if you or someone you know has a account with them.
