I saw a video on youtube showing the installation of the viking tactics light mount to an AR. The guy attached it to where the flashlight was positioned below the hand guard. Is it only able to attach that way, or can you attach it the opposite way where the light is positioned above the hand guard? (hope that makes sense). I’m attaching it to my MOE handguard. Thanks
Saw the vid on their site… That is what your are referring to, right? If I understand you question correctly, yes, you can attach it so that your light is above. It’s reversible and can be mounted practically any position your weapon system permits.
For your application, are you right handed and planning on activating your light (ejection port side), with your thumb going over the handguard? With the angle of the MOE handguard, will your light have enough room to clear the FSB?
Not an MOE handguard, but the VTAC light mount can be flipped like this.

ETA: The mount can be turned either way on the rail. You can position it at 12:00, 3:00, 6:00, 9:00, or any position in between if you’re hand guard allows for it.
I mounted above the HG like in the pic above.
No offense to Mr. Lamb, but the VT light mount is cheesy. Save your 25 bucks and go buy a LaRue instead.

I found it on their site and edited my post. Seeing how close the light sits on the photos above, will you have enough room to clear the FSB? Im thinking you might not with the slight angle of the MOE… If youre unable to clear it, you could get Vltor scout mount and have your light at 10-ish o’clock angle.
I’m right handed and plan on having the light on the 3 o clock side (ejection port side). The MOE guard has a bit of an angle to it, but it doesnt look too major. I think I’ll just go for it and see how it fits. I dont know exactly how I will set up activation, whether by thumb or a pressure switch mounted on my VFG.

While I’m a huge fan of LT, the VTAC mount is an eminently functional mount and exceptional value.

Sounds good. What is your grip style? With the angle of the MOE and the offset of the mount, the thumb-over-HG activation just might be perfect if you shoot with the thumb break grip, IMHO.
There is nothing wrong with the VTAC light mount, in my opinion.
It is rock solid once mounted on the rail and would take a Gorilla with a sledge hammer to knock it off.
I personally don’t see the need for an expensive QD light mount when I’m dedicating my light to the rail anyway. If I want to remove it it’s only just a minute with a hex wrench.
I see no need to spend boo koo bucko’s to have a QD lever, aluminum mount. They may look nice and funtion perfectly but the object is to have a light mounted solid. The VTAC accomplishes that for $20.

I broke my VTAC putting my G2 in it. Torqued it too much and it snapped. VTAC replaced it after I shipped it back, but I wouldn’t recommend buying one. Buy once, cry once.
I broke mine too. Didn’t bother trying to send it back.
FWIW, I find the MOE or any other 7.0 handguard far too short for mounting things to and would suggest the MI FSB mounts instead. You still need a light mount, but the standard handguard length just doesn’t have enough room for me.
a. Not very sturdy (see comments of others above).
b. When you crank it down, it bends / bows, and thus IMO is not fully engaging the picatinny slot. Therefore I think it is more likely to come off if impacted than a LaRue.
c. It’s nice to be able to take the light off when it is not needed (noon standing out in a field). Again IMO.
I must of got a good one, or two. I have used mine for the past three years on two different guns. Been through six shooting schools withit and used it in aggressive drills. The light/mount has been banged about every way you can on cars, barricades, the ground and even on a few people. Thing keeps on trucking.
I use the MOE MVG vertical grip. I switch around between thumb break and conventional methods with it. I’m even thinking about getting a pressure switch.
FWIW- the original VTAC mounts were made of aluminum- what they found was that due to inconsistent rail dimensions the aluminum would bend in different ways, the molded plastic is actually designed to have some give in it to allow for those dimensions.
If the user continues to tighten it down past the point that the mount is secure then yes, it will most likely break.
I have the LT mount as well as the VTAC mount, the only advantage to the Larue for me is the QD capability. That minor advantage isn’t worth $60 to me so I’ve got several VTAC’s and use one LT607 for a very specific purpose.
I have a bunch of VTACs on carbines and shotguns. While anything is possible, I have yet to see them come off bouncing around in vehicle trunks, during training, or other rough handling.
I have overtorqued the screws and stripped a couple out, but due caution on installation manages that.
