Double Star and J&T Distributing???

Has anyone used their uppers? has anyone done any business with J&T?
I have a chance to buy this for around $400 shipped and was wondering if its a good upper?
“new never fired 24” stainess bull barrel upper from J&T Distributing. Comes with bolt, carrier and extended charging handle. Also includes bipod stud, picatinny gas block, hi-rise upper, aluminum free float tube and 1 in 10 twist barrel"
Is this a good deal?

FWIW I had a J&T upper on my first AR. It did everything I asked of it, and I don’t think I ever had a malfunction. That being said I never ran it super hard like in a 1000 round 2 day class or anything. If this is for a beater/loaner range toy it’s probably a good deal, but if it will be your primary HD weapon I would save up and get a BCM upper.

I have two lowers to build and I have a Bushy M4 style rifle already. I also reload and thought reloading for long range accuracy would be fun. Does a 1 in 10 twist still shoot 55gr ok or do I have to chang ubullet weight also?

This is a benchrest/varmint upper. If that is what you are after, then you should be happy.

Whether or not it is quality depends on your definition of “quality” is.

That’s rather cryptic. Can you expand on that thought?

I’ve heard great things about doublestar…granted not everything about them are mil spec, but not everyone needs that quality in a rifle.

My definition of “quality” does not the words DS or J&T in it. YMMV.

C4

I have not heard that from anyone that works in the industry or is a professional instructor.

I have a DS LOWER and I like it alot. Used it on my SBR. Haven’t messed with any other DS products though.

Sadly you are right. There are plenty of people that would be just as happy with an airsoft gun. However, for those that expect to actually shoot the gun with the kind of intensity that is required to build proficiency, the DS/JT are sorely lacking.

Is it an issue of component quality? I’ve been looking at their barrels because they’re the only ones making a particular configuration right now (CL 14.5" LW with .625" “F” FSB and M4 cuts).

Pretty much. Grant and F2S put it the best. It will satisfy some out there with a need to own a rifle, but the shooter who buys to use will be disappointed.

Why not just buy a Colt 6520 upper receiver assembly?

Better yet, if you absolutely positively must have a lightweight barrel, why not wait a few more months for Clyde Armory and Bravo Company to get their lightweight barrel designs in production?

I’m not about to drop that kind of coin for a complete Colt upper when I’m only trying to rebarrel a carbine. Waiting for BCM is a definite option, but from their comments these barrels may not be available for some time (as opposed to complete uppers).

Lowers are REALLY hard to screw up. So I wouldn’t have any issues using a DS/JT lower.

Depends what you are after. A hard use duty weapon? Their quality is not up to spec.

Range plinker/dirt shooter? Have at it.

Grant, I’m not questioning you but in what way are their barrels not suitable for serious use? They’re pinned, have M4 cuts, an F FSB, chrome lining and what I assume are proper chambers.

My first guess would be that the barrels and bolts are not HP/ MPI tested and inpsected. Maybe you could contact Doublestar/ JT and ask if they are. Also, I believe that the standard barrel is chrome-moly and not chrome lined and they are 1/9 twist not 1/7. I also believe that they do not use Milspec barrel steel.

So looking at the cost of their uppers and barrels and then looking at what it costs to put one together with quality parts I think it’s pretty clear.

http://jtdistributing.net/store/more_k_16ck.html- Looking at their link a chrome lined barrel (which is an option) is an additional 50.00.

Model “1” Sales, Bushmaster, DPMS, and Olympic all make uppers with a similar profile. If you have to buy now, then you’d probably be better off with the Bushmaster and you’d definitely be better off with the Colt.

Are you just looking to rebarrel your weapon, or are you looking for a complete upper? Also, what are your purposes for rebarreling the carbine… is the barrel just worn out or are you looking for a different profile? If you’re looking for a different profile, you could get your barrel modified by ADCO for a few hundred bucks.

The reason people here dislike DoubleStar and J&T Distributing is because they both skimp on quality in order to cut costs. For example, it was mentioned above that their barrels are chrome moly as opposed to chrome lined, the latter of which is the minimum standard used by the military. And their barrels are 1/9 or 1/10 twist, both of which are below standard, as opposed to 1/7… this puts limits on what ammo you can use.

Material, gas port size, testing done and if a 1/9 twist, most likely the chamber is slightly out of spec as well.
