Im looking to get an eotech for Christmas and Ive been looking on their website but lordy there seems to be about 30 diffferent types.
Im just a recreational shooter, usually shoot hogs at close range, and empty beer cans with my AR. I dont need night vision. I reeally just need a good red dot sight.
So for my basic needs of shooting and I home defense if it came to it, what eotech is right for me in the neighborhood of $300?
Also, what will I need to get the red dot to match up with my flip up front and rear sights?
Do CR123 batteries really make a difference over AA?
The best value for you would be the XPS-2. It is not night vision capable but has the updated perpendicular battery compartment and electronics. It runs off of 1-cr123 battery. It also takes up less rail space then the older versions with parallel battery compartments. The XPS also repeats zero to 2MOA with just the screw. I tried it when I first got my XPS-3 (NV capable) and it worked.
Mounting the XPS directly to your flattop would give you a absolute co-witness. If you wanted a lower 1/3 co-witness, you would have to invest in a riser like the exceptional Larue LT-110.
Depends on what batteries you use in your light, or other equipment. I think the CR123 choice is as much about minimizing having to carry different spares as it is about the battery itself.
For functionality and $$ for feature, I’d recommend the OPMOD EXPS2 version sold by Optics Planet, currently $445 with rebate (rebate ends 12/31). I think it’s a great sight…I definitely prefer it over my T-1. It has a QD lever and side-mounted buttons (in case you ever want to use a magnifier) and has a built-in 7mm riser so it will co-witness your irons in the lower third.
The CR123 is a great battery, readily available in bulk for around $2 per battery and you’ll get better than 500 hours battery life. I’d get the single-dot reticle.
^That’s a good deal, there^.
I paid $500 for my XPS about 6 months ago. I switch rifles, so I added a LaRue QD mount, which gives it lower 1/3 co-witness. Some don’t like it, but I prefer the 1 MOA dot/ 65 MOA circle combo. I think it makes for faster target acquisition.
I like the 65 MOA circle. Among other advantages, putting the lower edge of the circle on the target helps me compensate for height-over-bore at closer ranges.
so lets assume the xps is give take 450. what eotech is around $300-350. Im not to concerned with rail space bc i have the M&P T and it supplies me with plenty of top rail space.
I agree with getting a CR-123 battery model. These batteries last longer during use, have a longer shelf life, and take heat and cold better than other batteries. And the units are the lightest weight. If you buy from O. planet, type in coupon code THANKS for 10% off.
Do Eotech red dots perfomr like Aimpoint red dots in that regardless of the position in your whatever the dot is on the bullet is going to hit (theoretically). I read that on Aimpoints sight that it doesnt matter if your completely squared up or off to the left or right. whatever you see the red dot covering is where the bullet will be going.
“Because of Aimpoint’s unique double lens system, the sights are parallax-free, meaning that no matter where on the lens you see the dot reflected, your point of aim will be your point of impact.”
I just picked up a trijicon reflex rx06 for $300. I think it would suit your needs better and battery life won’t be an issue. Of course, I’d save up and go aimpoint if I were you, but I’m not. Also, to answer your question about paralax, eotechs are as paralax free as the next rds… no worries, there.
I am getting a eotech 516 LNIB for $300. Its a little bigger than the new xps line, but not much. It also uses the CR123 battery, but uses two of them, giving it about 1000 hours battery life. The button’s are on the side too, making it easier to use with a magnifier. Plus it has a built in riser for the lower 1/3 cowitness.
I have also seen an eotech 551 available on an EE for around $300. Its smaller than the 516 and is NV compatible, which may or may not be important to you. However it uses the N cell battery and only gets about 200 hours of battery life.
I’m sure you can find 511’s out there too for around 300 bucks. These models are out there, you just have to look on several different EE’s, until you find what you want.
are the buttons on the side just for brightness? thats a dumb question but some of the pics I see of on eotech.com dont show the click adjustments so I want to be sure.
