Dedicated suppressed upper port sizing and buffering.

Jesus Fucking Christ.

How much more convicing you people need?

This isn’t going to work. The whole concept of a dedicated suppressed SBR is a fundamentally flawed concept. Shooting suppressed more than 20% of the time is unrealistic for any real world combat or law enforcement situation.

This website is for professional gun use. It is not for “builds” (aka: abortions) like what the OP wants. You can use Red Jacket firearms for that.

How are you going to handle a baffle strike when your silencer is full of patch particles and cleaning scurf?

This website is about advising people with what they need, not what they want.

Get a 14.5"-16" barrel with proper gas port size and cut it down. You can’t get a smaller port size on an available barrel and it will run great with a standard carbine spring and H2 buffer.

The concept is only flawed because of the NFA. I’d say the same setup without the NFA and welding would be an optimal HD gun.

You are looking at it from a stamp collector perspective, knowing you can’t get the $200 back. Think if there were no such thing as an SBR and silencers were cheaper because more were made and sold without the tax. Without the tax a reasonably durable silencer would be $200-$300.

Todd,

Lets get real. People that own silencers can put them on at will. I never think to myself that I need my silencer on all the time. I’d rather have a faster handling, shorter gun most of the time.

Go through pictures of the war on terror. How many SF operators do you see with their KAC can on as opposed to off. They aren’t governed by the NFA.

The OP lives in Washington and he needs to deal with it.

All the time, no. On a HD gun that will be shoot without hearing protection, I think there are some good reasons to use a silencer.

I could be wrong, but I don’t believe the OP is an “SF Operator” in Iraq. Just because YOU don’t shoot suppressed all the time does not make it a bad idea or unrealistic.

It also sounds as if he is trying to deal with living in WA.

I say do it OP, its your gun, you can weld a freakin statue of buddha on it if he makes you happy. start with a 16" to get a small gas port, have it cut down, then go from there. i had a DD16" M4 brl cut down and left the hole small. Its worked perfect with h2 buffer when i ran a can.

now if you end up going to prison for shooting your can, not our fault

If the bill in front of the senate fails and it’s still illegal to shoot suppressed, that’s a misdemeanor. I’m not afraid of that if it comes down to a shooting in my house. Hell my ears ring badly enough already.

And yes as a house gun there is a specific use for it. This won’t be a high round count system. No need to even use patches.

Btw I asked a buddy at the Ranger Batt how often they used their cans and he said more than you would think, particularly in Afghanistan. They average one lost KAC can a month while deployed, as the mounting system isn’t the greatest.

i almost never shoot un-suppressed anymore,

Agree.

I do the most of my carbine training in doors these days and a 10.5 is just brutal without a can.

C4

For the record I shoot my SBR suppressed 95% of the time. That isn’t the issue. I can also take it off.

The real issues is that you are not going to notice the difference between a 14.5 and a 16 barrel with a suppressor on it.

So why not do the smart thing and have it set up the smart way so that it can be removed if necessary?

I have 14.5, 16 and 20" barrels already. If I use an MRP I can still service the gas system, only thing I can’t do is take the can off.

Why don’t you buy a SPR/M4 instead of the Ranger?

A 16" with a SPR/M4 will be same overall compared to a 14.5" with a permanent Ranger.

You misunderstand- the 14.5 barrel will be cut to 11" so I have a small port. I already have a Surefire M4FA, that’s extremely short.

Same here. I cringe at the thought of shooting without a can…

Two bits of info to add here:

One, Senate Bill 5112 got “X filed”. Its dead for the session. No further action will be taken.

Second, you actually don’t need to weld the can on to the barrel. Go to Wades in Bellevue. They’re over priced but they have some interesting suppressed solutions. Essentially what they do is this:

They take a ten inch barrel and permanently attacha barrel sleeve to the barrel that extends the the length to 16 inches. Within that sleeve there is either a mount or a threaded barrel. You can then insert the sleeve and mount it to the gun. You get the ability to shoot it loud (works like a noveske flaming pig) or screw in the can and shoot it suppressed - in Idaho or Orgegon. The barrel is 16 inches, and is therefore not an SBR. The can can be attached and detached at will.

Hope that helps.

The bill isnt dead, one version of it died. It should come up for a vote next week.

I’ve seen a guy with one of those suppressor shrouds before. First thing I thought of was the cone my dog used to have to wear.

That’s a lot better solution than welding the can if you’re set on the SBR length barrel.

I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for the other bill … it’d be nice to draw a bit less attention from the Prius-driving douchebag crowd when I’m out shooting.

Hey Man,
I sure hope I am wrong. Do you have a link to the new bill?
