I have a BCM mid length upper that I currently have a troy two piece non free float quad rail on. I am looking to upgrade to a free float setup, and possibly shaving a few ounces off of the rifle. My question is, will the DD Lite rail 3 9.0 mid length mount on my upper WITHOUT me having to get the FSB removed? My google search has came back with no solid information on the issue.
No, and the FSB will also have to be removed to change barrel nut out.
I think the DD Lite rails require a special barrel nut. So the answer is no. Removing the FSB is not hard, but requires some knowledge. Also, the removal and replacement of the barrel nut is not “hard”, but requires knowledge and some special tools.
So I may be stuck with my rail then. DD’s EZ 9.0 says it only mates up with a ring on the FSB, and mine is a triangle.
If you installed the lite rail you would remove that part, so its not a worry. It would come off when the FSB did. The EZ rail is also not free float, so really not an upgrade.
I think you were on the right track with the lite rail. The upper will come apart and go back together with two punches, a basic all in one AR tool, and the included DD barrel nut wrench.
I would say the technical skill set needed falls somewhere in the neighborhood of changing pads and rotors on a car.
If you’re trying to do minimal work check out the DD Omega (not the X). It uses the standard barrel nut and it’s possible to install without removing the FSB.

In addition to the Omega, there’s also Centurion and Midwest Industries, if you don’t want to remove the FSB… Dremel the Delta Ring Assembly, clip the handguard cap, and you’ll have a free-float with the factory barrel nut.
