Cut Down, Re-barrel, or Buy New Noveske for SBR

The top one is my AR. When I get everything settled to get into NFA, I want an SBR. I was going to buy a whole new Noveske, probably with a 10.5" barrel. Now I’m wondering though, would it be cheaper but still just as effective to simply cut down the current barrel I have as much as possible before getting to the switchblock? Or would it be best to buy a new, short barrel and have this AR re-barreled? I feel like either of the latter two would be immensely cheaper and I would be happy with that length I think. I just don’t know much about cutting barrels and then whether I’d need to change the gas system or buffer or anything like that. Also, I’d want to put the AAC/Battlecomp hybrid on there (assuming its released by then). Thanks guys.

Oh and does anyone know if Noveske will cut it? I’d really prefer they do it since the rifle is theirs and I love it.

Damn I just realized that this should o in the NFA section. Sorry.

I don’t think you could do it with that barrel. If I am not mistaken, Noveske uses mid length gas for their barrels that aren’t short barrels already. If you tried to cut a mid length gas down to 10.5 I don’t think it would work. I am sure one of the other guys here can give more precise info, but I would just buy a new upper personally.

I think (but not sure) that Noveske’s gas system is a proprietary length. Close to mid-length but not quite.

Personally, I would just get a new barrel. Even build a new upper eventually. Willing to bet a new barrel would cost about the same as getting the barrel you have cut, if that is even possible.

There’s a lot to be said for having a non-SBR barrel/upper available, like when you want to go the range and not get pestered…

But either way, have fun, and understand that NFA is an addiction!

You shouldn’t shorten a mid length.

Save your money, you will have a long wait for the ATFE, and buy a whole new Noveske upper.

+1 on the Noveske built upper, so happy with mine.

What he’s eluding to is the Noveske runs relatively small gas ports to make their middies very smooth shooting, and hacking away forward of that would require modifications to the gas port - in short, for the effort and money involved, just get a new barrel instead of jeopardizing one that already shoots well, or ideally a whole new upper so you retain the value in your current one.
