I have three Z2 Combat lights that have the standard P60 incandescent bulbs. I see that Surefire offers a drop-in LED/reflector assembly, the P60L, that converts the Z2 and similar lights to LED. This retains the original bezel; the only part replaced is the bulb assembly and reflector. Surefire says that the P60L gives higher output and longer run-time than the original P60. Also I would expect far greater durability. Anyone do this? Any thoughts?
Don’t have experience with the SF.LED drop-ins, but use the < Malkoff Devices > that a lot of people are using. Nothing wrong with SureFire’s though.
go with the malkoff. i use one in my z2 when off duty and in my 6p while on duty. in the near future im going to upgrade my shotgun and m4 weaponlights with malkoff bulbs. also a few of my g2’s. you just cant go wrong with em. i get a huge grin everytime i blind a suspect.
A couple of years ago I got the Surefire LED module from G&R Tactical (posts under C4IGrant here) for an original 6P (circa about 1989). Dropped right in, extends battery life considerably-plenty bright and excellent throw.
I had a Z2 that my brothers bought for me prior to my first trip to the sand box and I loved it, still have it, though I always want the new and best thing so the LED upgrade made a lot of sense considering the sentimental attachment I had to the flashlight.
Needless to say, I dropped in the LED replacement unit from Surefire and it has run like a champ, the batterylife is much longer and I feel the beam is much brighter, throw is as good or better than the incandescent unit (nothing scientific, just my opinion). Batteries that are low but still run in my LED unit will not function in the incandescent unit. BTW, I really like the surefire combat loop too, I’ll need to practice the “Graham” technique more. I plan on upgrading all my Surefires w/ the LED conversion.
The Surefire LED drop in is 80 lumens and does extend your run time to around 12 hours. It is reliable, durable, and will light up pretty good at objects at 40 yards.
Malkoff M60 in a G2 for a weaponlight and Malkoff M60L (LED) in a G2 for a hand-held. I’m telling you, once you try a Malkoff you will never look at another Surefire bulb. The Malkoff’s aren’t that much more than the Surefires but well worth the money!
