I’ve got my eyes on a specwar 556 and was wanting to have my guy cerakote it FDE to match the rifle. I’ve handled their other cans and noticed their markings are more so laser engraved than actually engraved. My fingernail barely catches the lettering. Will cerakote cover them up or will it be okay? May have to go the cover route
Depends on the skill of your applicator. The OD cerakote on my specwar308 was put on lightly but still covered well and allows you to read the serial and mfgr information through it. Cerakote is supposed to go on .0005-.001" of an inch thick. It’s a ceramic based paint, there is no need to slather this stuff on. Proper preparation of the area to be painted is critical.
Another option would be to just mask off the engraved area.
Also keep in mind there are 2 types of cerakote, the C and H series. One is an air dry (5 days) and the other is an oven cure. The oven cure is tougher than hell, but has a lower temperature rating. The air dry is still tough, but less so than the oven cure but will handle a much higher temperature. I used the oven cure. If I could go back in time I would use the air cure for the high temp as I have slight color banding in the middle of the suppressor after a rapid fire string.
Ah ok. The guy that does it is an SOT mfg and also works for MAG tactical.
I was at Show Show and asked that same question. I was told " If its being used in a full auto don’t cerakote " due to the high temp.

Are there any colors that hold up better?
I have seen color change with H series and heavy FA fire, but seems to be cosmetic as coating stayed intact…I only use the air dry on optics and such.
