Carbine Light

Mr. Defoor,
I’d like to get your take on the use of white light on a carbine.

I have seen in pictures you have an X-300 mounted on the 3 o’clock rail. How do you manipulate the light with the support hand?

Also, what position and light do you recommend for shooters who have 7" rails? Carbine rails that can not be changed out as they are issued guns.

Does your grip on the carbine change from day to night?

Thank you,
Jack

I activate using my middle finger of my support hand underneath the rail.

For 7" rails it depends on if you have a laser or not. No laser- I’d go on top behind irons. With laser- I’d go S&S mount and use a (gasp!) vertical grip.

No my grip doesn’t change for that.

Behind the FSB?

Do you not recommend a Mossie mount for the front of the FSB?

Side behind irons I meant ( so that your hand will line up with light to activate better) . This is hard to explain in words.

What is a mossie mount?

No offense , but that is gay and I don’t like that setup.

Always remember simpler is better, mount the light on rail.

7" rails suck and that’s just the way it is.

“No offense, but that is gay and I don’t like that setup.”

Kyle, many West Coast LE officers are issued 1033 program M16A1’s as well as Colt 6920’s; neither have rails and unfortunately a large number of agencies prohibit officer’s from making permanent alterations to issued rifles. In addition, many officers are issued x300 or TLR1 lights. Can you suggest a better light mount than the Mossie for officers stuck with non-railed carbines that cannot be modified, particularly for mounting the commonly issued x300 or TLR1 lights? Thanks.

Yes, I can . In fact, this is the solution I’ve offered many an LE officer before, and it’s been used often.

This- https://danieldefense.com/rail-systems/ez-cartm-7-0-carbine.html

Which will go on and off easily and fast. Simply mount your chosen light on the rail at the side and replace handguards when on duty. Take off when done. No weird hand position, no extra snag hazard, muzzle can be used to strike, no worries about carbon on light lens when training.

$169 for this is a no brainer, it and similar can be found cheaper online as well.

Thanks!

Looks great for the 6920’s and others using carbine length handguards; any thoughts for the thousands of officers here stuck with M16A1’s?

Yes, of course.

We are talking about 20" triangular handguards still attached conventional with a delta ring and front plate?

If so, what I’ve shown shooters is to buy a secondary handguard and drill and tap to accept a 2" piece of picitinny at their desired locale. From this mount the light of your choice.

Again, similar to the last fix I described above, this is not perm and is swapped back and forth quickly. Also, the light can be positioned for the shooter.

I am imagining a 20" AR with mossie mount and wondering how it would be activated effectively? I peronally can’t reach that far effectively/safely. Maybe someone has vid
To show me?

As I said in the other thread and to Mr Mossies email I don’t know if I could break it, and I shouldn’t have said that without trying. But it’s still gay and not a setup I like/recommend/ or would go with.

People shouldn’t get so buthurt especially if they are in the product business.

It’s just my opinion anyway, someone else will say different, just like we teach and shoot different.

Hi Kyle -

If you don’t mind me asking - what are your thoughts on a Surefire X300 mounted at either 11 or 1 o’clock to something like this:

Appears to be a pretty bombproof setup and is something I’m considering for my new light.

Thanks!

Never seen it in person.

It does have a certain fishing lure like quality that makes it another non necessary additional piece of kit though.

I’ve been searching for a pistol light that I can use on a carbine. I currently use a Surefire m600c scout light and was looking at the Steamlight TLR-1S. Do you still have favorable notes on this light as mentioned in your blog? How does it compare to the X300?

I like a tlr-1, I still use it often.

Compared to an x300- the tl seems to me to be brighter. You have to remove a tl to replace batts. Tl switch has to be tightened up from
Factory to prevent ad’s. Surefire’s almost always need a shim to fit tight. You can buy 3 TL’s for the price of one Surefire.

What do you think of 3 o’clock rail positions? Or the KAC 1’’ light mount?

Love 3 o’clock mounting

Not familiar with the KAC mount

May I ask how come you don’t prefer tapeswitches?

Tape switches have a tendency to fail. Me and mine mostly don’t use them. If the gun is setup correctly, you shouldn’t need them anyway.

Just like with choppers- less is best

I hear ya. Thanks, Kyle.

BTW: I just realized I asked if you liked the 3 O’Clock mounting position in a thread where you just said you loved it before I asked.

I feel retarded.
