Looking to get a fixed type BUIS to go with an Aimpoint T1 Micro.
Which BUIS would you go for “specs-wise” and why? Both seem good, some differences bet both which may or may not be good thing, which is why Id like to hear from those who have used them.
Elevation settings
mounting
size and weight
Etc…
Photos of both combos/configs would be great as well.
Honestly I don’t think there is a wrong answer there, but I picked up a DD rear for my upcoming build. The LMT has the extra adjustability, but at a premium price. I don’t need the adjustments for a BUIS on an SBR so I didn’t find it to be worth the price, for me. The LT is nice and simple, and less expensive, but I don’t personally need to be removing and replacing my rear BUIS frequently enough to require QD capability. The DD sight is about as bare-bones as possible, and the least expensive of the three, but will still do everything I need it to do. It’s probably also the lightest in weight, if that’s a concern (though I haven’t weighed them to compare). This was my thought process on the choice.
Still, this is just one average dude’s non-LE, non-MIL perspective, so take it for what it’s worth, and nothing more.
Objectively speaking:
If you want A2 style elevation adjustments, get the LMT.
If you need QD ability, get the Larue.
If you don’t need the adjustments or the QD ability, get the DD.
There should be tons of pics of both the LMT and LT in the AR pic thread, and SBR pic thread.
After all, the BUIS is just supposed to be an emergency, last-ditch, use-in-a-pinch kinda sight that is only needed until your main sight is replaced at the end of the day (kinda like a donut tire).
I just do not see spending the $$ on a LaRue that I hope to NEVER use? And would a LaRue work X-dollars better than a magpul?
I bought the Larue because I had no Aimpoint at the time and I felt no need for elevation adjustment on a BIUS for a fighting carbine. I put the CSAT sight in it so it’s on same plane. I’m very happy with mine. Easy to adjust windage yet it won’t get bumped out of adjustment due to it’s low profile. It’s very robust and there are lighter BIUS out there, but if you don’t want a folding sight it can’t be beat unless you go with the new DD rear sight.
Because many prefer a fixed BUIS with a RDS. I know I do…
I chopped an LMT carrying handle into an LMT’ish Rear sight. I really like it and it was essentially free as the carrying handle was included with the gun.
If I was only ever going to run irons then I would throw down the extra change for the LMT.
Since you are going to run an RDS I can only give my .02 about the LT since I have no hands on with the DD.
The LT is very rugged and a solid sight. Some people say you don’t need a QD on a BUIS but I like having it just in case. If I need to remove it for some reason I’m very comfortable that I can remount it and it will hold zero. I run the LT on two of my rifles and I’m very happy with it.
My next build is a light weight SBR and I’m going to give the MBUS a try.
For a fixed BUIS I like the DD, its simple, light and cheap.
However I prefer a folding BUIS - it makes it easier to mount optics farther back on the upper like an ACOG, ELCAN, or a scope where eye relief is an issue.
I might look into the DD BUIS. I’ve got plans to get a 6920 or LMT in the next couple of months and that may be just what I’m looking for. I currently run a cut carry handle on my bushy.
Larue would be my choice of the two mentioned, First the attachment latch is on the right side, the LMT has a has a HUGE nut on the left side which gets in the way when using the charging handle. The Larue is available with same plane apetures and is minimilist with less to break and or snag, to me there is no question between the two.
Just a civvie here, but I chose LaRue because I trust the company, and I was ordering an Aimpoint and one of their cantilever mounts at the same time. Needed a BUIS so I tacked it onto the order.
I had an LMT fixed on my gun for years with an older Aimpoint setup. Bought a Aimpoint micro and bought a Troy folder. I just did not like the concept of the folder on my entry gun so I returned to the LMT fixed. Much happier with the constant co-witness. I tried the LT fixed on one of my other guns for a while, much prefer the LMT setup.
Thanks everyone! You all have been a huge help. Ya, I agree the DD’s no snag design starting to look very good despite not being considered initially.
Back to the LMT however, canting/twisting of the elevation feature’s not a problem like what we’ve been seeing with carry handles lately in the forum?
As for mounting, has anyone ever tried modifying their LMT BUIS? Cutting down the screw and replacing with a hex nut or anything of that sort?
I’ve chopped the screws down and replaced then with a small nut. Definitely makes them a little more stream lined. I honestly can’t remember the specs on the nuts I used though…
