I had no idea Brownells made their own stuff, much less something unique like that, Buffer-less AR Pistol Upper gas piston design. Any see such a thing in the wild yet?
Made by PWS. I’ve got a gen 1. I love it. Its make favorite upper to suppress.

Good to know, interesting.
So where does the BRN -gen 2 fall in the short stroke gas system model world? Isn’t the 180 system an early progenitor of the G36 type? I’m just throwing crap out there so that someone can dazzle us.
300BO would be interesting.
Above my pay grade but the 10" 300BO is the one I’d be interested in myself.
Yes, the G36 could be said to be based on the AR18. It works very similarly on the inside and uses action and gas parts of similar design.
I’d say every rifle I can think of from HK is derivative. Edit: the G11 was completely novel and rather clever. It derives almost nothing from anywhere.
How does that compare to the HK416?
“The one that’s mostly AR15, and partly AR18 edit: G36?
The G36 is heavily inspired by the AR18, with most of the big changes being external.”
-Eugene Stoner, probably
I didn’t know the G36 was based on the AR18, but “The HK416 uses a HK-proprietary short-stroke gas piston system that derives from the HK G36, forgoing the direct gas-impingement system…”
Shit, you’re right. The AR-18 borrows from the Tokarev short-stroke piston, and the short-stroke piston in the G36 is a bit different, and yes, the 416 uses that style. The regulation is done differently, and I’m not sure of any preceding designs that use that little nub blocking the forward gas vent.
However, the BCG of the G36 is very clearly borrowed from the AR18, much like almost everything but the gas piston of the 416 is borrowed from the AR15.
Another gun that uses the dual-recoil spring arrangement is the Vz-61. But, of course, that’s just a telescoping blow-back bolt.
I want to believe these BRN180 uppers are good. I’d get a 16 inch 5.56 one and put a folding stock on it. How do they suppress?
Every semi auto that isn’t roller locked, is either based upon the AR15, AR18, FNC or AK and more than a few people would put the AR18, FNC and AK in the same group. When it comes to operating systems, there isn’t really a lot that’s new under the sun.
Never got to mess with Brownell’s 180.
Caracal’s 816 is also 416 based. It was actually designed by one of HK’s 416 engineers as well as input from Sig’s 516 engineer. They have a good LEO, military, direct buy program too.
i’ve had excellent luck with my 223. i like it.

How about lowers to go with designs like this?
Anything that integrates a folding stock even halfway elegantly?
It’s what ever standard AR lower you want to use far as I know.
Brownells sells a matching lower which has M1913 in place of a receiver extension.

if you desire a folding stock or brace, and if you already have a standard lower, KNS offers an adapter that replaces the buffer tube assembly with a M1913 picatinny rail. the “flange” mentioned retains the takedown pin detent and spring. this is what i used on the pistol in the photo above.

I was all in on the jakl format, but was looking at the brn180 and the foxtrot mike gen2. Started reading about some people having problems with the jakl. Decided on the foxtrot mike offering.
When I got home from Florida though IL had passed a new law and I’m not eligible to buy even an upper here now. Or any ar part.
If the law gets struck down or I change my residency to Florida I’m leaning towards fox trot mike gen 2.
I’d like something that doesn’t look like tapco designed it as an afterthought.
Just a lower machined to take some decent folding stock, instead of the buffer tube… to rail… to rail mounted stock nonsense.
