Brake baffles vs. None effect on suppressor life

Googled this site and others for the effects of a brake vs. a flash hider(or direct thread) on suppressor service life. The concensus is the brake adds life over other mounting options, but I haven’t found any controlled tests where everything is identical except for brake versus A2 device.

Is there anything along those lines or not?

I’ve never seen such a test. My brake definitely is absorbing some abuse closest to the bore line on the baffle.

That said, I’ve never heard of a normal or even high volume use can’s baffles wearing out.

Idk how to upload pictures. I took a bunch to upload. They are of my surefire cans and surefire brake.

The brake is two chambers. The ‘baffle’ in the brake between the two chambers perfectly fits into the first big baffle in the suppressor. This baffle has a large enough hole to normally house the tines of the flash suppressor.

So with the brake this first baffle becomes a normal size one, but half the baffle is the brake and you can see erosion on the brake. To me this would cause more suppression and back pressure than using a flash hider.

When using a flash hider it is really directing all the gas between the tines and cutting into this first baffle. Over see pictures of this.

To me the brake would reduce wear, increase suppression and likely back pressure as well.

This is surefire specific.

It definitely makes a difference, in my experience, but most users won’t find the limits of their cans without doing dumb stuff just to be dumb.

It depends on the design of the can, too. Like if there’s a support ring impeding the flow of gas around the brake, or a shallow blast chamber, or no peripheral vents. Or weak materials.
