I plan on loading 55grn., in 223 and not if I plan on loading 62grn. down the road. So are my best choice for Powder and primers?
If your planning on using 14.5 or longer barrel I like to use H335. For 55 grain loads I use 25.5 grains. For 62 grain loads 25.2. Both of these are a shade over the hodgen manual but Ive loaded the 55’s up to 26 grains without issue.
26 grains of H335 over my buds chrony right around 3k fps out of a 16inch bbl. Its not as hot as m193 but its a good duplicate for my needs.
If your an SBR, H4198 fits the bill. Its very fast and will over pressue quickly… but 20.5 grains with 55 fmjs work great. I dont know how fast they are though.
Hope that helps ya.
Varget. Its temp stable, flexible (308, Grendel, 5.56, etc) and clean burning, pushes a wide variety of .224 bullets (40gr up to 77gr).
Because its a stick Its not exactly the best feeding powder out there, so measure carefully.
Hogdon BL-C (2) is my favorite .223 Powder…I use it for everything from 45 grain bullets up to 60’s with good results.
I will be using 10.5 -16.0 barrels uppers.
I have good results using Accurate 2230 with 62 gr FMJBT. Haven’t tried it with 55’s, but will soon as I recently bought a 1000.
Something in stock.![]()
I like Varget as it is an all weather powder, but it is slightly more difficult to meter correctly. Reloader 15 is also good and I use that for my heavier loads of 69+gr.
When I can get it Ramshot Exterminator for 55 grain bullets, Tac for 62 grain+. Accuracy loads in a 20"+ Barrel Reloader 15. And if I cant get the ramshot powders AA2520.
Winchester 748 for beautiful metering. 26.5 grs. for a 55 gr. bullet. I also use 26.5 grs. Varget for 55 gr. bullets. Velocity is just a few ft/sec. slower with the 748. RE15 is also good and has turned in great accuracy for .223 loads.

2230 perfect powder for 55g
TAC best all around 55g-77g
R15 has produce very tight groups with 69g
Varget is great but doesnt meter well.
1911snob, what brand names of 2230 and TAC and R15 Powder?
1911snob, did mistype R15, istead of RE15?
A bunch here really like Ramshot TAC - very good results:
Alliant Reloader 15
Accurate Arms 2230
Ramshot TAC
I personally float between AA2230 and TAC myself, which ever I can find with Bulk Hornady 55 gr FMJ (6K Box-o-bullets) and Widners 62gr “MILSPEC” FMJSCBT. I think the ‘steel core’ is a copper washed steel jacket cause it doesn’t penetrate anything like the green tip. I picked up some SIE 77 MKs I was going to try out with some TAC, Varget, RE15 and a couple of others but the 55’s and 62s have been doing fine for me this winter, 150m or less lately. As previously stated, both powders work well with 55s and 62s and meter well being ball style powders. TAC has alittle more fflexibility with the heavier bullets.
For SBRs, look at 223 handgun loads to see which powders burn more efficiently. As REN stated above 4198 is hard to beat s far. I was running 21.9gr of IMR 4198 w/ MIL/FED brass and WSR primer for 2550-2600 w/55’s out of an 11" with a 223 chamber. Watch the lot#'s on 4198. It doesn’t all burn the same. My previous lot I was running 21.0. Some books call for almost 23.0 grains, work up.
yes I did, sorry for the typo
W748 or H335.
Mainly loading 55Gr FMJBT
Tried some Varget, but it meters like crap in my Lyman powder measure.
With W748 or H335 i can set the measure and it throws the same amount
every time.

It definately isn’t the best feeding powder out there. I’ve actually had better luck with Varget since performing the “Dillon RL550B Powder Measure Retrograde”.
same as win 748, 748 is what win uses to load all there .mil ammo
your rifle is as individual as are you, there is no chiseled in stone load for your rifle, if you have the patience, try several powders and primers it took me almost 1,000 rounds of various loads for my LWRC ODA to put 5 rounds of 62 Gr. bullets in a 1 inch group after 2,500+ rounds the barrel needed replacing, i used the same rounds in the new barrel and guess what ? i got 3 inch groups, now starting over tweaking the load a bit, i am back to 1 1/2" groups. BTW…, this is all 100 yd. shooting.
