Best performing home defense 5.56 for 1/9 twist 16" bbl

For home defense, I wouldn’t think defensive ammunition choices would need to be barrier blind. I cannot forsee needing to shoot at an attacker through a wall, or other obstacle.

Is this line of thinking correct? Or should I be looking for ammunition that is barrier blind?

I have heard from some that mk318 mod 0 is great, but is that true in the case of home defense?

I think there is some stuff to get you thinking in there.

I guess it is situationally dependent, but I’m sure there is plenty of stuff in your house that a bad guy could hide behind that you may want to shoot through.

Federal T1/T3, SPEER 24455/24448 and BH 50gr TSX.

Hey Grant, are you going to be getting any more BH in soon?

It is back in stock!

If shooting into cars or through other hard intermediate barriers isn’t a major concern of yours, then I recommend Hornady 75gr 5.56mm TAP 8126N.

The OP specified 1:9 twist, and the 75gr (T1 and T2 projectiles) both have exhibited stability problems through some 1:9" barrels.

I would say the 50gr TSX would be a top option, followed by the various JSP loads in the 62-64gr area.

I’ve shot 75gr tap through my 1/9 barrel (16") and it stabilized out to 100yds for 5 rnds (farthest I shot, was just checking stability). Some barrels will stabilize it, some wont(1/9 twist). Only way to know is to test it. Depending on your home setup, you may want to get some barrier blind loads. Just because you cant imagine a scenario where you need it does not mean it wont happen. Its better to have and not need than to need and not have.
