Having read all the different discussions on rotary barrels on this website regarding the PX4 i have a question.
I have had my PX4 for a year now with 1200 rounds through it in 4 range trips, my main question is did beretta do something to increase reliability?
My PX4 has never had a malfunction, but what is it that causes the barrel to lock up? I have always made sure to keep the thing that unlocks the barrel lubed, do you think that might be a reason i have never had issues?
Never been a fan of the PX4 and holding one is all the more experience I have with one, so I don’t know. I am not sure anyone here will be too impressed with 1200 flawless rounds. Let us know when you make it to 10,000 and how it’s done.
Mom has one. It was the only pistol she could reliably rack the slide on. It has less than 1K through it with zero issues so far. It is a C variant and I really like the trigger pull. Much like a well worked over DA revolver. The frame texturing could be more aggressive as could the slide serrations.
I’ve put around 2K rounds thru mine and not had any issues with the barrel. I had a couple issues with chambering the first round from a mag when it was brand new, but once it got broke in and lubed well I haven’t had any other problems.
You could put 20k+ rounds through it and it could be fine. Yours is a sample of one. It’s data from many PX4 owners with high round counts that have meaning.
What difference does it make to have 1,200 or wearing the barrel out?
500 rounds is MORE than enough to make sure the weapon cycles properly for CCW.
He wants to SHOOT it…
OP, For the record, I recently sold a Beretta 8040, its the same thing as your PX4 only older. It was a great shooting pistol and the ergonomics were awesome.
I never experienced any malfunctions in about 600 rounds but I guess that not a sufficient round count to say if the pistol was “Good” or not.
Shoot the hell out of it if you like it, find out for yourself and form your OWN opinion.
The rotary barrel design is awesome. I kept mine lubed well.
I never had problems with the Cam that the barrel rides on but you can see the spots that is makes contact…lube that also
The guns were designed as duty guns. Most duty guns don’t get shot a lot. Thats not to say it cant handle it, but most CCW & HD guns dont get shot all that often either. For most any civilian if the gun ever failed u, 99.9999 % of the time, it’s not going to be in a life or death situation. Any gun can break or have issues. I don’t see any reason anyone could say that because a certain pistol won’t make it 2,000 rounds between cleanings, that it’s crap. Who does that and if so what’s the purpose? I mean how long does it take to clean a modern handgun? 5 min at most? I’m not saying its the greatest design ever, but I feel that it’s plenty capable of defending your life in a heated moment. Most civilian encounters end within 3 gunshots. Do people really think that a PX4 can’t make it thru a full mag without failure?Keep it clean and well lubed as any gun should b, feed it good ammo and drive on.Rant off.
Well I don’t have any links on hand. I’ve just read a lot of magazines and websites to know that I’ve heard a lot of the same stats, rather it be LEO or mag author. Maybe I shouldn’t have put a percentage, but I find it highly unlikely that you will be at the wrong Place at the wrong time, and legally draw your handgun that is built by one of the best firearms manufactures ever, properly lubed/maintenanced and have it fail you. I can find links later if u would like, but the truth is that most civilian encounters end very shortly, and with few rounds fired. A lot of people out there still feel safe with a 6 shot revolver. I don’t see why one wouldn’t with a 17 shot PX4, especially one that has went 1,200 malf free rounds.
Unknown whether they made improvements or not, but after many years of complaints, you’d think they’d eventually get it right. If your’s hasn’t had any issues yet, consider yourself lucky. Unfortunately, Beretta is or was, as arrogant as Glock. Regardless if the weapon was designed as a duty pistol or not, numerous folks on this forum has had many issues with them (including myself), as well as quite a few police and S.O.s when T&Eing these pistols. Mostly known for parts breakage and slide lock up, requiring a mallet to unlock. Not to mention Beretta’s really shitty C.S. I had to pay S&H to send mine back like 4 times on my .40, in under 1200 rounds, in less than a year. I traded it for an M&P40 and never looked back. Forgot to add that the M&P40 currently has over 10K rounds fired without issues. My M&P9 has over 15K rounds fired.
They already had a proven and vetted platform in the 92 and had guys like Ernest Langdon destroying people at national competitions shooting 92s. Ben Stoeger can’t even buy a new version of the gun he used to win USPSA nationals last year anymore. They also produced many variants of the 92 that were light years ahead of the standard M9/92FS such as the 92G-SD, Elite II, and 92G Compact.
Definitely a crying shame that Beretta dropped all that to go with the PX4. This is coming from a guy who uses only Beretta 92s for carry, home defense, and competition.
