I’ve noticed that there are many people who dislike the new Benelli MR1; many think it is trying to take on the AR market, I don’t think that is true; it is meant to be in its own market. But due to all the negativity I have seen, it may not last… But at least I recently picked one up because, well, I like Benelli. Started a long time ago just witnessing the M4 and M1014 in use…so recently I bought a Benelli Supernova Tactical and I love it. Then seeing that Benelli came out with a new 5.56 fun gun, I couldn’t help myself. Many people dislike the ARGO system very much with out much to back it up, and I cannot say much but I’ve had to fire the M16(yes M16, not AR) a bit and had many jams with it in a short amount of time. Granted dealing with the M16(teardown and such) is much easier than the MR1, with a little time they both become easy. So here is my MR1 as it currently is:
Oh yea, forgot somethings. Many people say that holding it and pulling the trigger would be an uncomfortable stretch…not at all. And the scope is back a few inches from where it is in this photo.
Shit I just came off a week of nonstop training and my M16 never failed me once - and I didn’t clean it the entire time. It even got full of Ft benning sand when I had to bend over to assess a “casualty”. Good magazines, that’s all you need. Maybe a little CLP every few hundred rounds.
Sorry to talk bout the M16 like that, hah didnt mean to offend anyone. And I think the reason it always fed two into the chamber was because of cheap mags but oh well, I may pick up an AR in the near future anyway…
And the front sight area is both metal and plastic, the outside is plastic molded with the forend and there is a metal sight assembly inside of it. So it looks kind of like a “W” where the "/" is metal and the outside “\ /” is plastic.
As my first post (been lurking for a while) I will offer the following.
The AR15 works and is everywhere literally everywhere. I learned why some say it “Poops where it eats”, when I bought a AR with a chromed bolt and bolt carrier. Ok so what it is a little on he freaky side.
Clean it, lube it, shoot it, repeat. No worries.
Now for the post topic at hand.
I have handled a MR1, it actually felt good. Different but good. I’m a lefty so the fixed charging handle on the right side is perfect for me. Its NOT to be compared to an AR15. BUT it could be compared to a semi-automatic magazine feed air cooled carbine. :mad:
Now think about this for a minute.
1 AR Mags Think about this they could have went full retard and used a Ruger mag or one of there own design. Very smart of them. PMAG’s fit tight from the ones I talked to that actually own them, but can be modified to make them easier to get in and out.
2 The argo system some truly believe in the Argo system and it shows some promise.
3 Benelli Shotty receiver. Some after-market spill over from the shotty accessory manufacturers.
4 Its just different its not an AR which are everywhere. FN and Keltec are selling bullpups that are plastic. Every manufactuere it seems has a Gas Piston AR and even rumors of a Tavor coming to the US why not. More black rifles more fun more variety more spice of life. If the world was just blonds it would be boring. I like brunnettes, and married a red head. Go figure!
Finally and the true icing on the cake.
I don’t see it for what it is now but for what it could be. You see that little curved space behind the magwell and forward of the trigger guard/bolt release. Its not as pronounced in the R1, the MR1’s large caliber Fudd father. The reason is that the R1 can shoot 30-06, 300 win mag, 300 and 270 wsm. All hunting calibers. So WTF who cares i’m not a FUDD you say.

The R1 is also available in 308 win. BABY
308 changes cover into concealment.
Imagine this: MR1 chambered in 308 with an 18" barrel being fed by a Magpul 308 LR PMAG magazine.
The prices I have seen in gun shops for a MR1 is $1049.00 to $1149.00 at a shop that though their stuff was gold.
Now look at how much a 308 magazine fed semi-auto is. Really look because you are into $1400.00 PLUS territory for a good one. I have come close to paying $1600.00 for a M1A SOCOM. $3000.00 for a SCAR 17S HELL TO THE NO POWER. BUT at say $1250.00 street price for a 308 MR1 with the current sights and rail yeah that I would buy in a heart beat. With the money saved hell I could buy 2. First rule of gun control why buy one when you can have 2 at twice the price.

Back on topic: I have an M1s90 and think this would give me good comonality for manipulation. I’m just getting started in 3-gun, and considering a .556 carbine just for that. As my AK and FAL would not be competitive. This might just be the ticket. If possible I’d probably modify the gun for PMAGS, as I see no reason to buy any other kind of mag. I like the way my shotty feels, so I would probably like the way this feels as well.
If your shotty has the same butt stock as this then sure commonality would work. I have heard from a few that have Benellis and they say some of the shotty stuff works on the MR1. Its also interesting if you look on the website for benelli in the MR1 section there is a video of the MR1 that shows the gun with a PMAG installed.
PMAGS will fit just NOT drop free. ALSO NOTE that from what i’ve heard you will never get the PMAG to truly drop free even AFTER modification. NOT so much a bad thing but one that should be considered in 3 gun. After talking to a guy that said he had one and the few times that I have handled one I think I have figured out a way to deal with the drop free and bolt release. Trevon have you found some good ways to get mags out and in quick???
After the whole ACR debacle and price SNAFU, I have considered a MR1 just for shits and giggles, and wait out the storm behind the ACR. Besides I’ve got 3 PMAGs that are a year and a half old with no rifle at all in the house to shoot them. The rifle does feel “Tuff” not cheap in anyway, actually feels pretty good.
Keep us posted Trevon. Everyone that I have talked to that has one loves the thing. Also from what I’ve heard about 2" groups at 100 is all the R1’s are capable of. Not bad but not match grade either.
Well, as I didn’t previously have an AR or anything similar, I didn’t have any magazines so I just got 2 cheap Brownell 20 rounds…they work good so far, easy in and drop to the ground with the push of a button.
I will try to get more pictures soon, hopefully this weekend. Any requests for anything you want to see??
Next time I will get to shoot will probably be the weekend after this and I will put quite a few more rounds through it.
I don’t see anything wrong with modifying it, just like everything else, gotta be somewhat unique!! haha, so I drilled a hole in the forend and mounted that bipod now instead of spending I don’t know how much for the “Tri-rail” at the front (not available yet) and another $39 for the proper mount. I may look into some PMAGs but I am not sure yet.
I do know that quite a few people say the stock is long but I’m comfortable with it. Same one as on my shotgun though so I guess its just about using it.
The only thing that kept me hesitant when purchasing was that they could possibly come out with a larger caliber…eventually deciding that that would be unlikely (at least for a long time) so I may get an R1 when I really start hunting some big game, or just a cheapo mosin nagant ha.

I keep telling my self just wait until you get to look at an ACR if it doesn’t give you a warm and fuzzy then go ahead. I wanted to look at a FN SCAR and when I saw one just this past friday I definitely did NOT get the warm fuzzy. Just felt I don’t know maybe cheap or chintzy. Just couldn’t put my finger on it but it was not for me. An AR feels good the SCAR did not. IT was $2999.99 USED.
Take a picture real close up of the area at the end of the forend hand guard but only the inside. Specifically the holes where you mount there stupid little Tri rail thingy. I have an idea about using a rail only. Does that area have a piece of metal in it or is it just plastic that you have to thread into. It looks like its just a little plastic layer over a small piece of threaded metal insert. The beretta CX4’s have something similar I think
Yes the stock looks long but to me it was not. First thing I though was “What the hell is up with the butt stock.” The stock is actually nice. Rubber Butt pad Nice soft rubber pistol grip. The cheek placement IE cheek weld is not the best but im used to the ar type stock.
Heck if I do buy one they will release one in 308 with the 308 LR PMAGS.

That is true, but I don’t what will happen so I just gotta wait. And I will not be able to get more pictures up this weekend but next weekend I can for sure.
And my AR is going to have to wait some more as there is another gun I will be getting before it
