I’ve read numerous times on this forum that people will do certain things ‘in a pinch’ while out shooting, which inevitably makes me wonder if said person has ever checked his gear prior to heading out. I’ve lost count of how many sets of ear plugs I’ve given out over the years.
How many of you conduct PCIs/PCCs (Pre-Combat Inspections/Pre-Combat Checks) or inventory and check your guns and gear prior to going shooting, going on duty, or going CCW to wherever.
What do you check for, do you use a check list, or just wing it?
I’m a high-drag, low speed (TV remote) operator, but I check mine with a checklist every couple months. Actually just caught a buffer tube that had just barely begun to loosen.
I usually finger the loaded chamber indicator on my Glock before strapping it on, if not do a press check. After everytime I shoot I arrange very thing back in its spot so I could just grab and go, but usually some time before each shoot to grab the specific things I need as well as do some basic dry fires. Nothing too extensive but I don’t like just assuming I have everything either.
This was something ingrained into my psyche while in the service.
My EDC gets a press check before I leave the house and cleaned at least once a month.
If I’m going to the range I’ll pack my range bag the night before. All weapons going to the range that day also get inspected and then lubricated before being cased for the car ride. After I get home from the range the first thing I do is clean my weapons.
I also have an emergency kit in my car. Flashlight batteries get swapped about every two months and I double check to see if any of the first aid stuff is expired.
I guess since its not combat I kind of get complacent, I will give my range bag a once over and then I’m off. I generally keep it stocked and I know whats in it, not really a needed to check it 2-3 times. Also IF I do forget something then its not the end I could either go home or go with out it.
My handguns are always loaded. I know they are loaded so I don’t really check them often. I don’t have anyone in the house that will touch them so it’s not an issue really. As far as other equipment before going to the range, I make sure I have everything the night before so I don’t forget.
I’ve got a range list. If I didn’t I would inevitably forget something important. After the bag is inspected (it usually stays packed) the weapons are all inspected and lubed as needed the night prior. Usually just an extra bit of oil. The M1 Garand gets detail stripped every few months and greased up again.
Since I have started using a list my rane trips have been much less frustrating. Now I just need to find a good new staple gun
My carry guns are always loaded. but one time i was in a rush to meet up with a client to conduct a private class and discovered that i forgot my carry gun. i had the holster and spare mags on but i forgot the gun.
i was honest with the client that i had Forgot my carry gun, he just looked at me like retard. i just carried my teaching gun the rest of the day as i had my honey do list to do after class. i can tell you that never happened to me ever again i now triple check everthing.
After a trip to the range I will download my equipment and clean it. Then I will re-up the ammo box (approx 250 rnds) and anything else that needs to be topped off (targets, stapels, tape). Basically everything is ready to go for the next range trip and all I need to do is grab my gun and toss it in the bag and take off.
I do as well. I also make sure my spares (I carry one spare on my person, and two in my car at all times.) to makes sure they’re fully loaded before I leave.
You’re inviting a Bubba to ask how you do that, and if you can post your log so they can see variances from mission to mission.
Back from the drift… I generally check my gear to make sure I have everything, but Gremlins do get in there every so often. I always take my parts/tool kit in case it’s needed.
After working the beat one late night and stopping about 10 guys with my partner, suddenly I hear my SGT (an asshole btw) screaming in front of the 10 guys, Officer where is your gun? I was like OHHHHHHH Shhhhit then my tactical response to him was, Don’t worry sgt I got my backup here (thank god) after that night… I always check it.
