I am a really new member here, but have been lurking around for a about 6 months. This site has been a great source of information and I have learned a lot from the members here. Thanks!
I would like to buy my first AR15, and after a ton of research I have settled on a BCM Mid-16 Mod 0. I have been looking everywhere for one, but all the online shops are sold out. I only occasionally see them on Gunbroker for exorbitant prices, but $2000 is a little out of my budget.
I have posted in the “…Where Can I Get It” thread, and on a few other web sites. Some of limited feedback I have gotten has been that BCM is not currently making whole AR15s and is instead exclusively producing and selling separate uppers and lowers. I heard the same thing from my (often unreliable) LGS. My question to the group; have you heard this also? Are there any industry professionals out there that can confirm or deny this?
Also, if anyone has any advice on where I could find a NIB complete BCM Mid-16 Mod 0 at a reasonable price, I would be really grateful.
I haven’t heard of complete rifles being available for a little while, though I would not be the best one to ask. Are you not willing to buy the two complete receivers separate though? Grant had some lowers in stock just this morning and BCM has some uppers right now I believe.
This is my first AR15 and, to be blunt, the thought of assembling an AR is really daunting. I am not that mechanically inclined and I am pretty nervous that I would end up making a mistake and damaging something.
How easy would it be to put the pieces together? Is this the same level of assembly that I would have after field stripping my rifle?
If you buy a complete upper and a complete lower, all you have to do is pull out the captured take down pins (2), put the two halves together, and push the pins back in. Its the first step to field stripping the rifle, aside from making sure its clear…
I was talking about buying a complete lower since BCM has been starting to crank them out… I don’t know where everyone started getting into assembling a stripped lower though that is an option as well.
If you are set on a complete rifle, be patient. I have seen a few gently used come across the classifieds in the past 8 weeks. One was priced at $1350 shipped and was flawless. This is only a bit more than NIB from G&R.
That said, I am in the same boat as you and have recently started to piece mine together.
I ordered a BCM lower from G&R today.
Plan on ordering my upper and BCG from BCM soon.
I’m going to pick up a Troy folding rear and save some money there.
Going to go to my LGS and feel a few different stocks before making my decision there.
All in it’ll be a wash in price as a NIB (given the FET and other savings). And I’ll get to customize my handguards and stock.
If all that you can find to buy is a stripped lower, Cheaper Than Dirt has a series of videos that you can watch online(free) that have helped me numerous times in assembling lowers. (only helpful thing available from these gougers)
The videos are of good resolution and explanation with a rundown of needed tools.
Complete uppers, in my opinion and preference, must be assembled by and/or purchased from top tier companies/smiths for easy mating to completed lower. Too much riding on upper assembly to save a few bucks doing it yourself. The cost-benefit well worth it in my opinion.
