ATF form 6 for an individual without an import license?

Here’s the scenario…

I preordered a NEA compact carbine stock from theammosource.com located in Canada for a 300 blackout build I’m doing. When I placed the order I understood I was going to have to pay a $50+/- import tax on top of the cost of the item, around $400 depending on exchange rate when they bill it.

I logged into their site yesterday to see if they have received the item yet and now it has been updated to say that US customers will have to fill out an ATF 6 (I guess it’s classified as an “implement if war”)

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think I can do this as a private citizen. I think I’m going to have to find a dealer with an import license and pay them to handle the import of this item for me. If that’s the case I’m going to cancel the order, because this stock is starting to get into the $600 range, which is a little more than I can handle when I can just build with a LWRC compact stock. I know it won’t look as “honey badger” cool, but it will probably function better anyway.

I also see that Troy Ind is coming out with a PDW with a similar stock, so I may just hold out and see if they start offering that stock at a later date. Or maybe a domestic manufacturer will come out with a similar product somewhere down the road to fill this void since Loki went under. Hell for $600 I may find me a used mill and try and build my own.

Anyway, if anyone has any insight I’d appreciate it.

I found this, if it helps

https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/210/~/requirements-for-importing-new-or-antique-firearms%2Fammunition

“An unlicensed person may obtain a permit to import sporting ammunition (excluding armor-piercing, tracer, or incendiary ammunition) and firearm parts (other than frames, receivers, firearm barrels, or barreled actions) without engaging the services of an FFL, provided the items are for personal use and not for resale. Generally, ATF cannot issue a permit authorizing the importation of firearms barrels for nonsporting or surplus military firearms.”

But then there is this:

“If ATF is unable to expedite the paperwork and your firearm is not claimed within 30 days, it could be transferred to a general order warehouse and you will have to pay the storage fees. After 60 days of transfer to the warehouse, it will be destroyed.”

Sounds like a major PITA, I think I would go another route.

And there is a decent thread on the badger here

Thanks, I had I hadn’t found the part about an individual, but I had read something about the unclaimed items being picked up or destroyed, and I’m not feeling like it’s worth a drive from Atlanta to upstate NY.

I used to live in Duluth in the 70’s, thats a long trek to NY

I’ll have to read the whole thing, but this looks like a viable option, and something I have the skill to pull off. Maybe not the shortened bolt carrier, but using a pistol system.
