The WOD has pretty much been a war in name only.
The drug problem can be broken down into two things, supply and demand. We have wasted time and money focusing primarily on the demand when we should have been hammering the supply. Curbing the demand is an uphill battle. Taking the gloves off and eliminating the supply is much easier and will take care of things on the other end.
People cry all the time that the prisons are overcrowded with drug offenders. Well my answer is to start executing dealers. Make it so that the punishment for trafficking or dealing drugs is so severe that no one wants to do it.

And unlike rape drugs are something people choose to get themselves into. If someone OD’s or becomes the typical addict living on the streets then that is their own fault. Everyone knows drugs are bad.
Where there is a market there will always be a supply. The cartels in Mexico, and S. America rival their countries militaries. It would be a war that never ends because as soon as you kill on group off another pops up to take their place. We’ve already been in perpetual “war” for decades now, and the problem has only gotten worse. You say take the gloves off. Well are we going to invade from Mexico on down, and commit millions of troops for the foreseable future?
Just like many other things in our society the WOD is just another tool used by LE up to the politicians to keep themselves in a job. Its never going to get fixed just like illegal immigration is never going to get fixed. We’ll be stuck with the perpetual police state because its a huge industry for government to justify everything from funding to laws that take away our freedoms. Everyone in government has to justify themselves, and keeping an issue alive does just that. In 20 years we’ll still be throwing people in jail for minor drug offenses, and complaining we don’t have the jail space to keep real predators locked up. I feel the same way about our road system. Its designed to keep LE in business in the name of safety instead of actually designing safe roads, enforcing tougher driver education, and stop pulling people over for going 75 in a 70 because thats what der law says.
Man Im so glad we have such fanboys around to keep the government in the business of playing big brother, and spending hundreds of billions of dollars on something that is never going to be “fixed”. To keep justifying laws that affect everyone in the name of “safety”…“but its to keep the drugs off our streets”. Great post, and to answer your last question on the WOD, Not a god damn thing other than to do more damage than the drugs do! The saddest part is that legal drugs kill more people in this country(USA)every year than all the illegal drugs combined. The WOD is a joke a disgrace insane and borders on being criminal.

Last week all they were talking about in MA was the new Big Dig, windmills on Cape Cod. It was on TV, covers of newspapers, talk radio, and on internet forums. A reporter on the street was stopping people on the street to solicit their opinion on “wind power”. He got a “Who dat?” from some broad that was probably thinking that was some new rap star she should know about.
Back to the drugs, the line of reasoning that they only exist as the plague upon society that they are is because they are illegal is ridiculous. That reasoning could be applied to all kinds of things that are illegal.
Someone stated that when some OD’s it is one person that dies. While it is one life (one of thousands per day) that expires it has a much larger ripple effect. I would say that the majority of OD’s occur to junkies. Junkies are people that have been strung out for a period of time. What about the journey they took to get to the junkie stage? I remember hearing that something like 84% of all crime occur with the perpetrator(s) under the influence of drugs or alcohol and that 88% of all crimes for profit (thefts for example, versus killing someone) are commit in order to procure money for drugs and alcohol.
I am unsure what world you have been living in the past 2 and a half decades, but we have spent tens of billions of dollars, posted troops all over the world, and just broke some international laws going after the supply. There are no Central or South American country, that can cultivate cocaine or act as a pathway, that has not been screwed up by our attacks on the supply.
The demand is what has never been addressed in a manner or scale even remotely close to the efforts of going after the supply.
So long as it is a multi-billion dollar illegal product, the supply will be around. Legalization is the only way to cut into the profits enough to eliminate a lot of the damage that the WoD does.
Is it a perfect answer? Nope, its not even a good one. It is the one that is the best of the options we have available to us.
I have been living in a world where there has been talk and half measures conducted with foreign governments in bed with the cartels.
Fight a REAL war with the object first and foremost.
That gets us back to the simple fact it would take MILLIONS of troops permanently stationed from Mexico on down, and a total police state in the US.
