Anyone else remember this?

In 1989, an explosion ripped through Turret Two aboard USS Iowa during a routine gunnery exercise, killing 47 sailors instantly.

That’s actually one of the worst F’ up’s I’ve ever heard of. You cannot offest Cannon Maintenance, you cannot foul up Cannon records. And for Goodness sakes you certainly can’t shoot ecperimental rounds with experimental charges.

That’s like pulling the Pin on a Grenade and putting it in your cargo pocket.

If you are ever in the vicinity of a cannon exploding it’s like a 155 round landed in your lap. Hundreds of pounds of steel fly every F’ing where.

That any Maintenance Officer allowed this to happen anywhere is an insult to Navy Maintenance.

Yes I remember it well sad to say. One of the crewmen was my cousins boyfriend and was killed in the explosion. Sad day for sure. I knew his parents also from family events.

He was the sailor from Oneida NY,which is the town/city I live in now. Imagine the government covering up something, who would of thunk it ! :grimacing: I can’t seem to copy/paste the link but if you search for the list of the 47 seaman that died it comes right up.
