Any experience with Defensive Edge SLR15 rifles?

Mace,

This is interesting. Can you elaborate?

Please inform me which companies you include in the “Johnny come lately” category and how you’ve defined such category. Last I checked, RRA was relatively new to the market when compared to Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt and even DPMS. Based upon your exclusive list and associated comment, am I to assume that you feel that rifles or components produced by Vltor, Larue, Daniel Defense, CMT/Stag, BCM or now Magpul aren’t or won’t be up to snuff?

Are you referring to the Sully or the DPMS?

DPMS

Sully Rifles is what James Yeager (owner) himself shoots and Chappy (Dir of Training).

Quote from Yeager:

DPMS rifles are total f*cking JUNK.

I thought that might be what you were tryng to say. Thanks for the clarification.

I am an owner of a DPMS M4 type rifle. Had a second one and previous to that a Classic Sixteen. My own observations of DPMS is that fit and finish are excellent, parts seem to be of good quality. They do use 4140 instead of 4150 barrel steel, which doesn’t affect me. The Classic Sixteen I had did seem to have a “snug” chamber. I have read all about the bolts breaking, but when compared to the number of rifles put out, I don’t think it is a problem. Hell, I have seen pictures of Colt bolts with broke lugs, and it seems right now that Bushy is putting out more imperfect bolts than anyone. Plus, in everything I could dig up, DPMS’s problem seemed to stem from the chrome plated bolts, hydrogen embrittlement? Before Sully went out on his own, he fully endorsed DPMS. Before making my purchases I exchanged quite a few emails with him. This was even after he and DPMS parted ways. DPMS puts out a good product, albeit it is not a Tier 1 gun, but they don’t have the TDP either. There is a number of local PD departments around me that have them in their cars and the guys have no complaints.

I wouldn’t say there is a whole lot negative things to say about “jonny come lately” companies that is unless all the RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT on the AR-15 weapon system ended in the late '60s. The new companies are just finding new things to tweak. The problem is the “jonny cut corners” companies and still sell their guns in the same price range.

The stock itself is certainly a solid unit - put it this way, I’d hate to get smacked in the nose with one.

The whole unit is probably heavier than a typical telestock with buffer tube, but it balances very well. Note that I have it mounted on a lightweight barrel profile carbine, so YMMV of course.

I’ll see if I can get some pR0n pics up one of these days…

The pics would be most appreciated.

What would people like to know about our SLR15 line of rifles? Please ask. If people do a little history research you will find that we are not new by any means to the rifles or training. Yes we were affiliated some what with DPMS, as for several years as we had been offering Armoring & Instructor Courses in conjunction with each other up until 2003. Our Armoring and Instructor Courses are in their 11th year, and we are busier than ever. Our staff has been building rifles for over 20yrs, and I have personally been building custom AR15/M16’s for over 12yrs. Our Chief Machinist/Gunsmith has been doing what he does for approximately 50yrs, he was raised by his Grandfather who was a Prussian Machinist, apprenticed at Williamsburg, among many other things. Myself, my background for this particular weapon system at work hit the 20yr mark last August for being a Cop and I am assigned to Special Operations, this means that I spend a lot of time teaching with a little door kicking mixed in.

I was the inventor of the Sully Stock system for the AR15/M16 weapons system. It’s idea was based on need for those of us that kick doors as we find that most rifle stocks are too long, and collapsibles don’t hold up well getting banged around getting in/out of vehicles and going through doorways. It has been in molded production coming up on 6 years, and I used to hand build them before that. If you like the rifle stock, just wait until you see what we are about to release this Spring (hint!!! hint!!!)

In our rifle builds we had always used other manufacturers receivers and built the rest of the weapon to the customers specifications with our input. Then it dawned on us one day that we should try to improve upon the weapon system in many areas, so it started from there. The SLR15 Rifle label is in its third year and going stronger than ever. We don’t think of ourselves as a come lately company, as in reality we have a long standing track record in building rifles and providing training courses.

If you look at our rifles closely you will find that we use forged uppers and lowers that are made to our specifications. The fire control parts, bolt carrier assembly, and many other small parts are FN & Colt Contract, of which many of the attributes have been discussed in other threads. On all of our rifles we beef up our extraction systems. The upper levels of rifles have nickled extractors for better wear and 1pc gas rings. On most models we offer choices of style of furniture to include color, choice of upper receiver (A1/A2/A3), and we also offer same plane apertures, over sized trigger guards, 3 types of carry handles, and Flip-Up BUIS and many other features.

All of our rifles are carefully inspected for parts, assembled using Militec-1, Slip2000 EWL, and anti-seize is used where required. All rifles are taken to the range and the barrels are broken in, they are zeroed, and the rifle is stress tested. The stress test means that we do a 100rd burn on them to heat them up, the heat will show if there are any tolerances that are pushed to their limits which would cause malfunctions. This heating also bonds the lubrications. Then all rifles are brought back to the shop and cleaned, inspected, and lubricated, then packed to ship. Many of our rifles are custom builds, meaning that most of our customers like the options of being able to choose which stock, color, which rear sight, etc, we want people to get exactly what they want.

You will find that there are many serious people using our rifles. The SLR15 Rifles were the SWAT Magazine March 2006 Cover Story. We have been featured in many publications over the years, and you are about to see many more articles on the SLR15 Rifles, some other firearms and accessories that we are about to go public with, and our training.

When we made the decision to come out with our own label there were many things that we wanted to do and not do. Mostly we wanted to build a high quality rifle. Quality we take very seriously as we realize our rifles go into harms way to protect those that use them, and those same people protect others, I myself along with my other teammates use my rifles, so I want them to be reliable and the best thing that we can use. Next we decided to provide the opportunity for everyone that buys one of our rifles to take a free tactical carbine course from us at any location that we teach this course through out the year. The training course offering allows us to do several things. It allows us to get face to face with those that have our rifles. It allows us to teach people how to properly maintain their rifle and to shoot that rifle so they get the most out of it.

We don’t make any claims that our rifles are better than anyone other makers, we let those that shoot our rifles decide what they think. IMHO visual inspection can show features, shooting rifles is where quality in materials and design come to light. We do things as we see they need to be done. We offer many features and ideas behind our rifles, equipment, accessories, and future projects that you are about to see. Most rifle makers build good things, seek out which features you want and don’t want, then get exatly what you want.

Great info. I hope you guys stick around and contribute your knowledge. It’s much appreciated by those of us who don’t build rifles for a living.

Glad you finally made it here Sully!

Mace

Sully, thanks for stopping by. Can you shed any light on your new stock? Is it still a fixed stock? Any storage? You metioned this was in the works several months ago, I’m still waiting…

Also, do you offer twist options other than 1 in 9"?

Back in June No Less

This is a Sully Stock on my Noveske Infidel 6.8. Without a doubt the most solid stock I have ever had on an AR. There is no storage but I don’t miss it. With CT still having an AWB, this is a great option but even for anyone else you stand a good chance of getting rid of your folders.

The stock is the equivalent length of a 4 position folder one click out. There is an additional spacer that when attached would make it 2 clicks out. Comes complete with buffer tube, buffer and spring. Just add rifle.

It is spendy for a fixed stock at about $110 but if you look at it as a replacement for folders, compared to the popular ones it is a bargain. Since I just set my folders at the length I want and leave them anyway, I’m switching everything over to the Sully. Highly recommended.

Really nice blaster. I’m leaning heavily toward a Sully for my next build, but I’m curious if he has something new coming down in the near future, I may hold off just a bit. There’s something about the dead nuts simplicity of a Sully that appeals to me.

Hi Sully,

I hear of a new project in the owrks. Care to shed a little light?

Do we build rifles with barrels in any other twist rates than a 1/9? The answer is yes. We do occasionally us a 1/7 on the Operator models upon request. We are pondering of doing a run of 1/7 for our Commander as well, which would be later this Summer at the soonest. We have had a few requests to do some retro stuff like a 1/14, of which could happen later in the year. We have been doing quite a few custom builds of the traditional XM177 configuration, of which come out nice, especially when we finish them with the traditional Colt Grey, and occasionally trim them out with tan or OD furniture.

As far as some of the things we have in the works, there is always numerous things that we are working on. Our projects usually take years to develope to get them just how we want before we go public with them. Our current Sully AR15/M16 stock was a project that took many years before it went into molded production. We have been working on a new Sully Stock that we will probably unveil around March if it stays on track. The new Sully Stock is ready to go to production as we have several working prototypes that we have been running hard for the last year and all seem to hold up well and get good feed back from those that are abusing them, which makes us happy with the overall results.

What is the new Sully stock, well we will not release its details yet, but I will tell you that it is not for the AR15/M16 weapon system. When we are ready to unveil the new Sully Stock (March is our expected release date), you will also see some other concepts of ours as well. We also have a year long rifle project that we will be unveiling soon that has been nicknamed the “Holy Grail” by those that have been able to give it a test run.

Thanx for the update. I was wondering if you were going to mod the AR stock, but it sounds like it isn’t going to change. I am curious though what you’ve got going on. Guess I’ve gotta wait and see…

Can you post any pics of your XM177 builds…with specs please

I’ll second that. The Sully stock is the best compact fixed stock available.

A second generation Sully incorporating some of the user mods previously seen would be better yet.

For what its worth, I am definitely considering an SLR-15 for a future AR.

for three reasons:

a) it seems like they thought out their market approach real well. no bells, no whistles, just careful assembly, good parts suppliers, and an “everything you need, nothing you don’t” rifle style.

b) Since I’m almost surely moving to a foriegn country (new york) within a few months, the sully stock beckons me. (I already bought a Like New preban colt A2 20", and want a carbine too - but prices on pre-ban’s seem to be rising now and at 600$ for a pre-ban lower, I’d rather build a post ban AR with a compact stock and a Krink brake) As has been mentioned here, I’m also of the sort that leaves an M4 stock in that middle position and never moves it. (in fact, when I used to live in NY I had my SOCOM stocks custom fixed in the middle position) In terms of fixed stocks, the sully looks to be a better thought out unit than the RRA entry stock which didn’t quite fit me right when I had one. It was good for standing quick drills, but on the bench or prone, it lacked that rear under-stock purchase area that the sully stock has.

c) this is AWESOME…

We are currently giving away a FREE 2-day Tactical Carbine Course to Everyone who purchases one of our SLR15 Riflesfrom us. This will take place April 15-16 in Camden, TN. We have teamed up with Tactical Response for this event. We will do another in the Summer of 2006 in Minnesota, and probably a Fall one somewhere West or Southwest (location pending).
