Ammo or gun problem

So a buddy of mine was at a class and started having some rounds come out of his rifle all jacked up. Is was about 6-7 rounds out 1000 Anyone ever see this happen where the jack totally separated from the jacket before hitting the target? I’ve never seen something like this. Ammo issue or gun issue??

Never seen that before. What was the ammo?

My dept uses 55gr freedom ammunition reloads

This has happened suppressed and non suppressed

This is visible on paper too? Like he/you can see the fragment holes?

I do have a Sabre Defense barrel that spins 55gr Hornady Soft points apart. I’ve never figured it out, but it’s those bullets specifically.

In my case, it’s definitely the barrel that’s strange.

It does look like the jacket is spinning off. Could be bad bullet jackets too.

Yes visible on paper. A keyhole from I’m guessing the lead and the copper jacket off target Not every round which is why I’m thinking it’s an ammo issue. Also. This problem just started and is not constant

Sounding a little like defective projectiles/jackets. Are others shooting the same ammo in their guns?

Could be a combo of a sharp or deep land in the barrel that’s cutting into the jacket and causing the jacket to peel under RPMs.

We’ve been shooting this ammo for years and never seen a problem like this. I’m hoping it’s just a fluke. Because I can. Figure anything other then maybe a defect in the few rounds that the one guy got lucky enough to get. The barrel looks fine also

Tried the same ammo out of a different gun?
Whats the twist on that Barrel?

Yes. This ammo has been used in over 50 different rifles with no problems At least that were noticed. The gun is a 1x7 twist that’s has had zero problems for the past 4 years until this popped up

Borescopes okay?
Does it do this with 62 grain projo’s?

Everything scopes out ok. We’re going to shoot 62gr today to see what happens

Sounding like some defective jackets. This kind of thing is why I almost never run FMJ through suppressors.

I might shoot a group with match ammo through the barrel just to seal the idea that the barrel is ok.

This happened with the same ammo. What caused this?

Unless I’m mistaken, that looks like very excessive headspace.

That is an extreme overpressure event. Note the brass flow into the ejector hole. The blowout occurred at the only completely unsupported spot; under the extractor (which I presume was damaged). Use of that ammo should be discontinued immediately, and the weapon needs to be inspected by an informed armorer before returning to service. The ammo manufacturer should be informed, and held liable for replacing the bolt assembly and barrel of the weapon.

Keep some of the ammo as collateral(they will want it all back). I’d be curious what it chronos, but would not recommend y’all fire any more to find out.

What gun is this, and is it labeled 5.56 NATO, .223 Wylde, .223 Rem, or something else?

I’ve shot many 10s of thousands of FMJ through cans, and have been present for many hundreds of thousands of FMJ firings, and have never personally seen a jacket separation.

Its not because the ammo is FMJ, it’s because it’s garbage FMJ.

Yep. Case head failure due to massive over pressure.

Fired from a bushmaster xm15 that isb25 yrs old. Has a 5.56 chamber Being that old it was more of a safe queen. Maybe 5k rounds though it. Had regular maintenance check ups every year. Always passed headspace and throat erosion :man_shrugging:t3:

Yeah, it’s not likely the gun’s fault. That’s an ammo problem. A dangerous one.

How’s the weapon after that?
