Amd-65 rail options? painting and prep advice!

As the title states, looking for rail options. I know of utg, mi, ultimak, and krebs. Do not want to spend the money on ultimak or the krebs to be honest. Basically whats the difference quality, fit form, function of utg vs mi?

Also anyone completely painted an amd-65 not just sections but I would like to do the entire rifle in a flat color with some accents. Thanks fellas

If you just want a rail for rail’s sake, get the MI. If you want to cowitness a red dot optic, get the ultimak.

As for painting it, I opted for light dusting of krylon camo tan and khaki, then dusted with flat black to subdue the tan coloring a little bit. I chose a fairly subtle tan, if you want a more ‘complete’ job, I’d look into duracoat, ceracoat, or at least something like Brownells Alumahyde.

As far as prepping the receiver and plastics on the amd-65. Would brake cleaner be sufficient and do i need to wire brush the barrel receiver or anything metal?

Is that just a regular AK74 brake on there? I am interested in doing an AMD kit build on a 12.5" barrel and am trying to find a brake (that doesn’t look like an AMD) to pin to make it non nfa.

That is a awesome looking rifle.

I think a polish tantal brake will work. Also aa-ok.com (I think) has more options.

Brake cleaner can do some pretty horrific things to some plastics.
Better to go with a plastics safe carburettor cleaner instead if its automotive chemicals you’re going to spray on stuff.

  1. Strip the rifle.

  2. Thoroughly degrease all metal parts.

  3. Spray all parts with this:

  1. Paint the parts.

  2. Reassemble.

  3. Success!

Any 14x1/LH muzzle accessory will work. There is no problem finding them.

Real '74 brakes are 24x1.5/LH. There are a lot of commercial '74 style brakes out there too. There is an adapter out there if you have a real one lying around…

Just realized you’re not SBR’ing.

You’re going to need a barrel extension to get to 16" too.

This was mine before I had my stamp:

I am trying to avoid using that style brake. I have found that the Tantal brake might be long enough to pin and make it just a touch over 16", and still look like a '74 style brake, although I can’t seem to find the exact dimensions. Copes has them for 28 bucks, so I am going to order it and see what happens.

Also, is that an Ultimak tri rail mounted on lloydkristmas’s AMD?

Thankyou for reply and basic instructions. That adhesion spray in the google link combined with krylon is right up my ally… I didnt really want to put any parts in the oven… Which were most options i was reading about! Also as far as swapping muzzle devices how did you temove the existing junk flame thrower break lol… I would like a functional or atleast a better looking muzzle device! Thanks again

If you use a standard Tantal brake, you’re still going to come up short.

The 3 effective inches of extension take you from 12.5 to 15.5. You’re going to need a specially made commercial brake if you go that route.

I personally think you should SBR it, otherwise you should have picked up a standard AK (IMO).

The rail on mine is a Veriforce- one of the first decent quality rails to show up for the AK.

Also any recommendations on pistol grip and foregrip replacemtns? I read somewhere that mag pul rail sections can actually be used on amd-65 existing hand guard… If not i would opt for the hogue and does any retailers sell the sling attachment that sits above the pistol grip and bottom of receiver? Sorry for barrage of questions… But new to the amd and trying to make it a little more to my liking! Thanks again

The AMD brake is far from junk and is actually quite functional and practical… especially on such a short gun. It’s only drawback is the weight.

I’m not a purist when it comes to preserving the exact look and proper parts, but when it comes to mods I take a hard look at practicality before I go sprinkling the pimp juice and hanging commercial parts off my rifle.

(Though I must admit, there was a very brief period when I didn’t…)

The AMDs are on the market as a quick and easy route to SBR- like a PTR-PDW, GSG-5p, Draco, etc.

If you want a 16" gun, there is more than one reason to buy… a 16" gun, rather than work on converting a 12.5" gun.

My AMD’s are kit builds, purchased for as low as $89 from Centerfire back in the day… so no issue with installing whatever muzzle device I deemed appropriate after building.

I wish I bought 100…

Yes, MOE light kit sections will work. So will others.

I did this back when Magpul used to make only those goofy little “Mag-pulls” and all the AK aftermarket accessories were Chinese junk:

(Yes- my gas tube lever is up but this is not a complete rifle at the moment)

As far as replacing the stock foregrip- keep in mind a full size foregrip can contact the mag during mag changes, so take a hard look at the stock grip, walk the grip farther out (most comfortable for me), or consider a stubby.

Use the pimp juice sparingly…

More than likey the stock handguard will stay and i will add a flashight and i would like the magpul angled foregrip… Possibly ultimak rds combo down the road… But im thinking hard about useing this as my first krylon experiment. Im thinking of doing the entire gun after de grease and dissasemble. I have serious numerous clean and just spray jobs on ar 15s. They seem to hold up fine. Actually when they start to wear off i kinda like the rough look to them. I appreciate your time and opinions! Keep em comin

I have a few full size AK’s in the safe already, and since I live in MA I have to pin the brake anyways, and I can not justify the tax stamp for a neutered rifle. A few of my buddys and I are getting together to do a build party for a friend fallen on some real hard times, and I want to do something a little different.

Thanks for the info though, I appreciate it.

Oh, and sorry for the thread hijack.

Its actually a shortened Arsenal SGL rifle, and the brake is permanently affixed to keep legal length. I dont think the brake would be long enough to keep an AMD legal.

You could try a Draco? There are a few long brakes that could be permanently attached to allow the use of a stock.

The Draco is an 11.5" gun. That means you’ll need 4.5" of doo-hickey hanging off the end of your barrel instead of 3.5".

If you want a 16" gun… buy a 16" barreled gun!

(and it’s always best to avoid welding stuff to your barrel)

Unless you live in a state that requires permanent mounted muzzle brakes on all rifles younger then 18. :suicide:

I actually prefer the AMD-65 to other AK variants due to the way it handles. The AMD-65 is ~1lb lighter than other AK’s. Most rail systems will damage this balance as they are heavy. Just something to keep in mind.
