I am on a quest for a 7.62x39 SD/Hunting rifle. I have been looking hard at AK’s but I really want a folding stock. Underfolders look nice and all but are a little less than comfortable to shoot. I really love steel side folders but not too many companies make a Khyber Pass AK. Is there anyone else than Arsenal (Read: cheaper) that builds an AK like that in 7.62.
Also, I have been looking hard at Czechpoint VZ-58’s with the folding stocks. Anyone have any experience?
I don’t have any experience with any “cheaper” Khyber Pass style AK’s. If you are considering the VZ from Czechpoint, I highly recommend them. The stock is not the most comfortable but you could wrap it with paracord. Spare parts for the VZ are plentiful right now and cheap. You could stock up on spare parts and mags. I hope this helps. Maybe someone has another alternative on a folding stock AK. Good luck.
I don’t think you will find the VZ stock as comfortable as the folding A frame AK stock. I’d actually pass on BOTH and get a Arsenal Bulgarian SLR 107 full folding stock.
If you are going to hunt with it, it’s what you are going to want.
What you’re looking for is the triangle skeleton stock. No one that I know of makes a US made one where you can just order and install. Some have tried (DPH I believe) but in very limited quantities. If you just want the look and dont care about the folding option there are a few companies that make a fixed version that installs like a regular stamped receiver stock would. Also there was one that was made here and would fold but the latch was on a huge rear trunnion block. Extremely fugly, adds at least a few more inches and Im not sure on its durability
The Russian 100 series folding stock would be your best bet if you want a folder. Its a stock thats just like the standard polymer fixed stocks you see but it folds to the left.
Both the the original triangle skeleton stock and the 100 series stocks are expansive when you can find them. They also require gunsmith since the latch is inside the reciever.
Other options you have are cutting the rear tang (permanent mod) and installing an ACE stock adaptor and folding stock.
I had been curious about those bolt on cheekrests for underfolders previously. Does anyone have any experience with them hands on? How stable of a shooting platform do they give you?
