Sorry to ask what is likely a repeat question, but my Laptop is fried and the forum doesn’t seem to be letting me search on this iPhone.
I’ve got an aimpoint ML2 coming in (woohoo) and will need a mount for it. I’m looking to not break the bank, but I’ll pay what I have to fir something reliable.
What models, what brands?
What does current doctrine say re: location of the aimpoint? (closer v farther)
LaRue seems to be the way to go for a mount. As for distance from the eye, there’re two schools of thought; one says “put it far out there, and if you can see the target through the tube, the dot’s close to the target, so it’s faster to make that tiny adjustment”. The other says “Pull the optic back to your eye, so the dot’s range of view is closer to your actual field of view, and you’ll always see the dot”.
That’s my take on it; I run mine all the way forward on the receiver, but not on the handguard. Leaves space for a magnifier.
Thanks for the thoughts! I think being towards the end of the receiver is a good compromise, too. I’ll probably start there at least.
I knew LaRue was a winner, but I didn’t know if there was a cheaper option that got the job done well? I don’t ‘need’ the cadillac unless I have to for reliability.
I would get the Bobro if i was in your position if you can find one avail…but they really all function as advertised.
Location of a red dot is pure preference…if you note, Socom II setups w. red dots often have the red dot way up front. Then other times you see ARs with the red dot almost touching the rear buis. On a traditional upper receiver, my position is at the end of the front of the receiver.
I do like the looks of that Bobro vs the others, and they are in stock at BravoCompany. I’ll be getting my upper and furniture there anyway. Geez, I’ve never dropped this much coin at one place in my life! Very scary.
Welcome to the world of the AR brother!!! It does get scary thinking about all the money I’ve spent at Bravo Company, skd tactical,Brownell’s,Midway USA,and LaRue. I’m stealing someone else’s line (can’t remember who said it) but the AR platform is an adult lego set!
This is an Aimpoint QRP mount on AR15.com. I just saw it this morning. The spacer allows you to co-witness with the front sight. The price is very right… I use one myself.
BCM was out of Larue, and most other mounts, but I like the looks of the Bobro anyway. So that’s what I ordered! We’ll see how it works when it arrives. I also went with the MBUS, as questioned in a thread below. And an MS2 sling, and an ASAP, and an MI MOE rail, and some Magpul furniture… my lord…
I have the ADM (Lower 1/3 Co-witness version) in use for a ML3 on a Noveske upper. I’ve had it off the gun a half dozen times, playing with different optics and return to zero is outstanding. POI has never shifted.
The tension adjustment (to the rail) might be more coarse then some - you turn the head of the tension bolt one notch at at time, so any one adjustment is a fixed amount. My first mounting attempt was just a little more than snug and allowed the POI to shift a little. One more “notch” of tension adjustment probably put it tighter than needed, (probably just a stacking of tolerances on my specific rail). Considerable force to unlock the lever is now required, but as noted the POA/POI has not changed with multiple removals.
