That’s the objective answer… the subjective one is it’s TOO HEAVY, and it’s all up front. I’m not quite sure why the Bushmaster is so heavy, when the Remington Military version actually felt ok. Maybe it’s the longer gas system and the clunky el cheapo Bushmaster rail.
The ACR is kinda hefty at 8.2lbs in the Bushmaster format…and it comes with a 1:9 twist NON chrome-lined barrel. :rolleyes:
At this point I wouldn’t even considering forking out $2-3k for an experimental rifle at best with no military or police specs or contracts. If the design does stick around and gets some sort of mil/LE use, it will likely be heavily altered to meet their specifications and end up being a more thoroughly tested and proven design. Remember, this isn’t the Massada that turned heads when it got into the hands of testers…this is a Bushmaster altered design at almost double the price that Magpul came up with for the Massada.
Seriously, why not go with something like this at only 5.7lbs, and 60yrs of design maturation:

Just to “keep it real” while the ACR’s (Remy & Bushmaster) barrel is not chrome lined, they are cold hammer forged with a proprietary bore lining that supposedly has better corrosion resistance and service life than chrome lining. Whether that is the case or not waits to be seen. But it sounds promising if both Remy & Bushy are using it in the ACR.
I think the published Bushmaster weights are wrong.
For example, how could the Basic ACR and Enhanced ACR have the exact same weight? That just strikes me as wrong…
The weight is my #1 problem with the ACR.
I’m going to sit out the ACR wars till the price comes down, and SBR barrels go public.
I think sometimes people forget one of the reasons the M16 was adopted in the first place is the fact that at the time it was the lightest option. The aluminum and plastic parts, “space age” materials made it much lighter than the traditional wood and steel counter parts. Why would a potential replacement for the AR/M16/M4 etc be heavier than what it is supposed to replace?
I fail to see the logic…
the Remington Military site (remingtonmilitary.com) lists the ACR with 14.5 inch barrel and w/o magazine as “7 lbs”.

The Mil version is still under development and weight reduction to 7lbs. is part of that process. When completed, application of those design changes and the use of alternate material components can be applied to the civ model.

So…they are going to put out a first generation 8.2lb rifle, and then after a while they are going to put out a 2nd generation rifle at 7lbs? After spending well over $2k on the 1st generation model I’d be having some serious buyer’s remorse.
I know I’m not a firearms designer, but the Bushmaster Rep says that it is simply impossibe to sell the ACR for under $2k. Isn’t that what good engineers do?..they run into a budget problem and they come up with innovative solutions to reduce the price while maintaining good quality controls? Without cost reduction they will greatly hamper their ability to compete with the SCAR. An American made company too… The average cost of a HK G36 in currency conversion is only $1800, and that includes the optic.
As far as the barrel coating issue goes, why have I not heard of this process before in a positive light? Time will tell, but I’m skeptical of it and if it was just as good or better than chrome lining I’m sure it would have been hyped a little more elsewhere. I’m guessing that it is production cost reduce that is being advertized as “just as good” as chrome lining.
1:9 twist? Okay, so a lot of civilians use lighter weight stuff. However, every Colt 1:7 I’ve shot with both 55gr and 77gr loads have had similar groupings. If Bushmaster has trouble with their 1:7 barrels grouping lighter weight stuff well, then perhaps their new and improved coating or barrel specs are FUBAR.
