Different Drug Problem (source unknown)

The other day, someone at a store in our town read that a Methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county and he asked me a rhetorical question, “Why didn’t we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?”

I replied, "I had a drug problem when I was young: I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and community socials, no matter the weather.

"I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn’t put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.

“I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profantiy. I was drug out ot pull weeds in mom’s garden and flower beds , and cockleburs out of dad’s fields. I was drug to the homes of family, friends and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some firewood, and, if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back tot the woodshed.”

Those drugs are still in my veins, and they affect my behavior in everthing I do, say, or think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack or heroin; and, if today’s children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place.

God bless the parents who drugged us.

Sounds like a sound solution for our modern drug problems.

Two biggest reasons, IMO, is women going to work, and lack of family support (divorce, work, people in general).

Its kinda messed up but 30-40 years ago a middle class family with one source of income (father) had more disposable income than a family does today with 2 sources of income (mother and father). This is due to inflation, higher tax burden, and a variety of other factors.

Notice, generally, the worst young people almost always come from broken homes or where the mother works, too, and the kid only sees his parents a couple hours a day. All the “kids” I knew growing up who had a stay at home mom, and good family support turned out pretty well.

Now a lot of women get offended at this, and think they have the right to be at work just as much as the men but its true. Women are predisposed to nurture, and raise kids. Men are predisposed to “hunt and gather” IE bring home the bacon. But its just hard anymore to raise a family without two incomes unless one parent is making 70K+ a year take home pay.

welfare and no-fault divorce killed the American family unit. you don’t need to stay a family to survive anymore- just get a divorce, and sit around on welfare. and don’t get married or re-marry- you’ll lose your welfare benefits.

just one component, though- there is no single cause. just a rapid degradation of values in the last 40/50 years.

When wasn’t there a drug problem? The pre 1900’s in to the 20’s you had opiates, 30’s-50’s had methamphetamine’s, 60’s - 80’s had it’s fun with hallucinogenics and cocaine, the 90’s had crack cocaine. And the 00’s have kitchenaid meth. Since the dawn of man we’ve consumed chemicals to alter our state mind.

The only reason you see it now bigger than 30 years ago is due to enforcement. It’s big business on both sides so it’s in the spotlight.

And the consumption of alcohol still have the greatest social impact in this country, hooray lobbyist! :smiley:

People have nostalgia for times that never existed, today people live longer, healthier, and have a far higher quality of life than the generations before them.

In these great times of the past people like to forget the shit that went on behind doors, child molestation, wife beating, rape, drugs, it was taboo to even speak about such things, so people acted as if it didn’t happen. To have a child out of wedlock was bad enough, to get raped… Well that was just something that didn’t happen. Hell couples on TV slept in separate beds and never took a shit.

If you consider that there is more than a few anthropologists that think that beer had a bit to do with our very distant ancestors taking up agriculture, I think that alcohol can be declared the hands down winner for impact on civilization.:wink:
