I just bought another lower and am thinking about going the SBR route on this build as I don’t have one currently. I don’t see a lot of 7.5 pistol length guns on here like I have been thinking about, maybe a piston driven 7.5? Or would it be better to stay with a DI 10.5 like an LMT?
I just figured if I’m going to spend the coin to do an SBR, I wanted a really short one. It would be for HD and fun at the range. I doubt it would be used much for anything over 200 yards and paper/steel only.
What do you guys think? I know the ballistics aren’t that great out of a 7.5, but does the overall length being shorter out weigh any decrease in ballistics?
Do you feel that spending the money on the tax is worth it to only shorten up the gun 5" though? Is that length that much more effective in a CQB or defensive set up?
I’ve never been in a situation that would require me to actually use a weapon in a home or enclosed environment, and hope I never have to. I won’t even pretend to know what I’m talking about in that regard. That said, I have messed around doing some practice room clearing, just to feel what it was like/how everything moved/etc, with both a 14.5in and I believe a 10.5in barreled AR. The difference is astounding, and well worth $200. Combine 4.5in less barrel with a fully collapsed stock, or one click out, and it’s incredibly compact. Normally I wouldn’t run it fully collapsed, but if compactness for a short amount of time is the name of the game, works for me.
My first SBR experience came with a 6.5" barrel. If you need to ask about a sub 10" barrel, you don’t need one. They have all sorts of downsides, like rocking your world, lighting targets on fire and knocking them over, making your ears bleed, not having enough handguard to hang onto, etc.
I would pay an SBR stamp for a 14.5 or a 12.5. Actually, if the NFA didn’t exist I would have four 12.5" ARs and one 18" AR.
FWIW,
I have a 10.5 and the noise is incredibly loud. I’m talking pipe-bomb loud. Way louder than my 16" 308 AR. And god forbid I shoot ‘hot’ ammo like milsurp or xm193 stuff. Goddam fireball. Shooting prone is tough, too, as the blast is right there in your face.
I would only do a 7.5" suppressed. I’m going to suppress my 10.5 soon.
that being said,
there is a LWRC PSD upper for sale in the classifieds! Please buy it before I do…
For the moment I am living in a state where I can’t have SBRs. I’m glad they let me have cans. I do get to have conjugal visits with NFA weapons out of state… it keeps me sane…
You can get the tax stamp for 7.5" and build a 10.5". That way, if you decide down the road to do a 7.5" you can.
Personally, I wouldn’t go shorter than a 10.5". I currently have two configs in 10.5" and changing one out 12.5" and when I get my 3rd stamp, it will be for a 14.5".
FWIW, if you ever decide to get a suppressor, you’ll read that a lot of people suggest 12.5" or longer.
depending on the ammo you are going to be using, anything less than 10.5 for 556 and your wasting your money and terminal ballistics are somewhat poor. Short PSD barrel for say 6.8 and you looking pretty good, but for 556 stick with a 10.5 or 12.5. personally go with 10.5 and throw a suppressor on it, you won’t be disappointed.
Generally, the people that use 7.5" in 5.56mm are inexperienced losers with low intelligence.
7.5" looks cool to stupids in pictures.
With 7.5" you get:
Huge blast and noise
Functioning problems
No silencer warranty
Ballistics that are not adequate to kill any substantial living creature. I have shot many raccoons with my 10.5" and sometimes it takes 3 shots to kill them.
Looks at the range by experienced gunmen that think you are douche.
I think you should contact Rob Pettorsson at POF-USA and tell him the he and his company does not know what they are doing because they have a 7.5" SBR that works great in semi or full. Also suppressors are in warranty on their 7.5". www.POF-USA.com :big_boss:
I don’t know either way. As a victim of the public school system this is all above me. However having said that I have seen and fired 7.5" AR’s and they are no louder than my 16 and 20" barrels and I never experienced any mechanical problems and I saw them do a 1/2 MOA at 50 yards. I think the things are used by defence contractors because of great concealment. I guess I am just a douche and an inexperienced loser!
They have seen their fare share of issues, and the only reason you don’t ever really see any problem threads is because most people who buy piston ARs don’t shoot them enough to expose their deficiencies.
They also make the stupid roller cam pin, which can lock the bolt into the locked position if the roller jams up, and will prevent the removal of the charging handle when you try to clear the weapon.
I tried to help a guy remove his BCG from his POF gun and we COULD NOT get it out. Next time I saw him he said that carbon, and copper shaving binded up the roller.
Also, their rail system is obnoxious, weighs too much, and is still fucking carbine length.
The guy now shoots a DD 10.5’’ Mk. 18 clone (DI). I see him every weekend, where we bet on who can shoot a tighter group (10.5’’ DD gun vs. 11’’ chopped KAC gun)
