5.7 in Home Defense

Unless we do something totally unheard of, like test it in a calibrated tissue simulant and see how much damage each cause.

Assuming projectiles optimized for their respective velocities, we can both predict which will cause more damage.

Andy

Except there is no optimal bullet for 5.7, because like the .380 it lacks the energy for both expansion and deep enough penetration.

Thus my point, a non expanding 5.7 has about the same wounding potential as a .22 mag.

To be clear I couldn’t agree more, Todd.

Andy

Welll…the Lehigh Defense pistol bullets have been testing well in a few cartridges.

Perhaps one designed for 5.7 would be worthwhile? But then again, being solid copper, they are long-for-the-weight bullets and may not work with the 5.7 case / rifling.

Not directed at anyone here, but 5.7 fanboys are the biggest D bags in all of gun fan boy gun land. Even worse than Glock fan boys. I wasted time on a forum today posting facts about it, no amount of facts had 5.7 fan boys changing their mind it’s a magic bullet that goes through BA like butter, etc. Done venting.

LOL. There’s no shortage of tards who gravitate towards guns. I’ve been posting on Glocktalk recently due to slowness here… And I’d forgotten how stupid people can be.

The home defense threads are unreadable. Bird guns and pistols, etc. Guys there buy Kel Tec junk and LCPs. Holy crap, it’s scary how dumb some people are.

Cuz ma over penetration!

Bird gun recoil must surely equal knock down powah!!

And the guys who carry a substandard gun in case it gets held by the police after a shooting.

I’ve wanted to like the 5.7 as a PDW for a long time but nothing I read has convinced me. So it is either 5.56 or pistol. My 10.5 inch guns are my “PDWs”.

Oh, and the tardedness on some other sites on these subjects is ridiculous. I troll TOS just for the purse swinging that ensues after a page or two of serious talk. Lots of entertainment value for sure.

True.

There’s endless YT vids comparing 9mm vs 5.56 penetration of drywall. Curiously, there’s also an endless number of people who refuse to believe it.

Guns attract the delusion-prone for whatever reason.

It has a very high cool factor, I wanted to like like a fan boy when it came out. The reality was a different matter, and for those who do facts over feelz, cool factor was gone as real world use feedback from LE, terminal ballistics testing, the fact the good stuff not sold to civis, etc. made it clear there were better choices for AS/HD/Duty. Sure, better than throwing rocks, not gonna replace boring pistol rnds or PDW’s in rifle rnds.

I bought in to the 5.7 hoopla for a time years ago. Had an FN 5.7 handgun and a ps90. You couldn’t buy the really good ammo unless you were a cop or govt, and I’m not sure how good the “really good” stuff was anyhow. I loaded up on some 5.7 ammo on the cheap but as more and more data came out about it’s effectiveness I decided to unload the platform. I sold handgun, ps90 and ammo and made quite a tidy profit. ps90 was a neat little gun though but I could never get used to bullpups.
Now it’s a glock 19 or FN FNP 9, DD 10.5, and Remington 18" 870 for my safety and lots of other stuff for fun.

I had an AR57 upper for a few years. It was fun but would break the feed lips on my mags. I liked that I could gut a junk mag and open the feed lips to catch the brass. Fun for awhile, but it got old and felt 5.56 was better suited for my needs and sold the upper and the rest of the good mags I had.
