I see 9MM is a popular caliber for PCCs, is 45 ACP?
I’ve given some thought to building a PCC, initially in 9 however I’ve begun to think a 45 may be better, if only for stopping power if used as a home defense weapon.
I have plenty of brass and reload both. The main draw to the 9 would be using my Glock mags. I have 1911 mags but I like the higher capacity of the Glocks.
Macon Armory is supposedly the best .45 AR kit you can get- I’ve wanted one for years but have just never stepped up and got one. They offer both a blowback and direct impingement version of their upper.
B&T makes all their offerings in .45 and 10mm, while fantastic, very pricey as all things Swiss are. I believe they all have lower versions for Glock, but maybe that’s only the 9mm versions not sure.
I was hoping their website would say a little about the pros and cons of the two operating systems. I can see blowback being cleaner than DI, there must be some reason to go with the DI system.
I’d like to have the option to run it suppressed, I’d think that would be another point in favor of blowback.
Blowback can be a pain with cans. I have a 9mm AR, I run a really heavy buffer AND a heavier spring just to keep the ejection port from barking louder than the muzzle. It’s not the end of the world but it’s just added weight. You can also definitely feel that reciprocating mass.
I’ve thought about one of their DIs or a delayed blowback upper from CMMG. It’s been a long time since I have talked to Macon (a few years). Last I heard DI 9mm was not reliable but .45 worked well.
I’m aware. I run the exact same. 9QT with the additional weight kit maxed out and the XP spring. Combined with the heavier blowback bolt carrier. (14.5 oz vs standard AR at 11.6) My bolt and buffer combined weigh 27.5 oz. VS 14.6 for a standard BCG and buffer.
Thing is though that you are trying to delay blowback by adding mass (weight). Not the best method of delay, but it does work. It tames the ejection port bark on my 9mm. It amounts to several ounces of additional weight and all of it as reciprocating mass. Like I said, not the end of the world, but it could be better. Given the choice of mechanical delay vs “added mass delay” I would prefer the former.
ETA: The added mass is all about trying to get the 9mm AR to play well with a can. If you are not running suppressed, or if the ejection port noise does not bother you then obviously YMMV.
ETA#2: Just to be clear, the heavier spring does not increase the delay, it is for controlling the heavier buffer.
