If I do get a magnifier on my 16" black rifle w/eotech, what y’all thoughts on a 3x or a 4x magnifier?
i don’t hear the best things about the EOTech magnifiers, especially the 4x.
check out the Aimpoint magnifiers.
if you want to spend a little less money at first check out the LaRue Po Boy Special… 2.5x Hendsolt in a LT pivot mount.
basically, you get the best mount around for a magnifier and for about half the cost of a chinese airsoft magnifier ($50) you get a sturdy refurbished german optic.
i wont say its got the best clarity, but its lets you try out the concept and if you love it, you can upgrade to the Aimpoint magnifier…if you don’t love it you can still use it at the range and you’re not out too much money. worst comes to worst you can sell it, someone will want it, and you wont take too bad of a hit.
i like my Po Boy Special behind my ML3, but will probably switch to an Aimpoint 3x on the pivot mount and then put the Helsolt on a fixed QD mount behind my 552 for range use…or just use it as a hand held monocular.
I havent abused my 3x EOtech much (see pic in signature), but its held up well. Not a bad way to go if you currently have a red dot solution.
The Eotech magnifiers are hit or miss.
Out of the 3X offerings, the Aimpoint is leaps and bounds above the Eotech. The Eotechs I have run across were like looking through a glass Coke bottle by comparison. Plus, you get the option of the Larue FTS mount for the Aimpoint while Eotechs 34MM mount has an ARMS lever. Boo.
As far as the 4x, the Eotech is bulky and the mount seems overly complicated. However, it also uses high quality glass like Aimpoint has in it’s 3X. If I wanted a 4X I would get an ACOG for the same price (understanding that you lose the 1X option) or a Nightforce 1-4X for a couple hundred bucks more, but the 4X Eotech magnifier is a quality optic.
For 3x, buy and Aimpoint in the Larue FTS mount, for a 4X the Eotech will work great but is twice the price for only one more power. YMMV.

Aimpoint’s lenses come from the same supplier as a lot of big name $3000 scopes. It is exceptionally good glass.
Also, Hensoldt made some of the nicest European optics in history. For $45 from Laure it’s a great way to try out a magnifier at a fraction of the cost. Hensoldt scopes grace a lot of $20K sniper systems.
I loaned Haji my Really Po’Boy special, he wrote up some initial impressions on it.
Absolutely no problem with my 4X/557 combo. The 4X (w/ fts mount) really shined in the carbine match I participated in a few months ago. The 4X glass is clear and crisp and soaks up illumination like a intergalactic black hole…
