Things I like about the Z point.
-Size
- low mount
- clear sight picture
- Easy rail atachment
Things I don’t like about the Z point
- Low mount (did not work on several guns I wanted to try it on, no after market mount options to change height. example LaRue T-1 mounts in 3 different hieghts)
- Zero adjustment. No clicks, use a dial attached to provided tool. Not as percise as I would like.
- Zero adjustment screws protected by a small rubber plug easily lost.
- Mount did not work well on some rails I tried to mount it on (rails out of spec?)
I am not going to sell the 1 Z point I have but I would not use it on one of my regular use guns. It will stay on a gun that spends most of the time in a safe. I don’t think it will hold up as well as a T-1. I will continue to buy T-1s for the daily use guns.
I have one on a first-up gun.
The adjustment is certainly not as easy and positive as, say, and Aimpoint or EoTech, but the old “you don’t get something for nothing” rule applies here… it was all part of keeping it more compact, which it certainly is. I keep an Allen wrench on the pistol grip for adjusting the thing but I just have not had to after initial zero. I don’t even bother with the little rubber caps for the adjustment screws.
Again, I suppose, to keep it compact and versatile, they did not make it 5/8" taller to accommodate AR’s only. I would up using an old B-Square riser I had around… maybe not the super-cool brand I’d prefer but after widening the slots from Weaver to Pica, it’s been good to go now for a couple years.
The Z-Point has a photo cell on top to assist the battery when the sun is up. it’s very easy to turn on and auto-adjusts the dot to ambient light, very effrectively. This is easily overridden using the on button. There is only the one button-- touch for on, touch and hold for off. To brighten the dot, touch-touch/hold. To reduce intensity, touch-touch-touch/hold. It’s all very handy.
I’ve proven a return-to-zero on it at 100 yards, taking it off and on several times-- no issue here.
I think its low profile is one of the best things about it. Some things it doesn’t do as well as larger sights but I am happy with it.
Just revisiting this since I just shot the 5th Annual Combat Rifle Championship with the Z-Point. It was well up to the task and actually the easy-on feature came in handy when I started a stage after forgetting to turn it on! Cost me a second maybe-- just reach up and touch, and it’s on.
One stage had very small steel targets out to about 100 yards. For this stage I dialed the dot intensity down so the dot didn’t wash out the targets. This worked well and I was one of only a few to get them all.
I changed the 2032 battery prior to the match although it showed no signs of being weak. Battery life on these appears to be very good.
