The round tube type. Looking for a lighter and possibly more comfortable handguard. I have quad rails now, but honestly don’t utilize them. Only seem to run a sling and light, sometimes an afg. What are your thoughts and experiences with these-good and bad. Thanks

I added the 11" Extreme to my 16" Noveske and it’s easy to use during class under pressure or just going through drills. The length and design of the rail allows you to “slide” your hand into different positions as needed. Money well spent.
I just swapped my DD M4 12.0 FSP for the Troy, and I will say that there was not as much difference in the weight between the two as I thought there would be. I expected a noticeable change, but my highly accurate hand-scale guesstimating couldn’t tell much difference between them. :jester:
I added an 11" Extreme to one of my middy’s and a 13" to the other. What I particularly like is the better hand grip you get and not having the rails interfere with your grip.
I’ve had one for a few months. What I like is the feel and weight. However I don’t like the way it mounts. If you follow their installation instructions the pinch bolts are to be 1/2 turn past finger tight. Problem is that the rail still moves with this torque. All the posts and complaints of broken rail due to those pinch bolts being over tightens leaves my a little uneasy. I did according to Troy have to over tighten those bolt to get the rail to not move. To me it’s obvious that weight was a concern during the R&D of their rails, I do feel that maybe they should have been willing to have a bit more weight as a trade off for a better mounting system. They obviously feel the same way as the newer design has addressed this.
Also what I don’t like is that my 13" rail is not square. What I mean is that the rail off 1/8" to one side where it ends . This coupled with what I feel as a weak mounting system is a deal breaker for a rail mounted sight. So for my Troy rail it’s going to be, from now on, on a scope only rifle. For that role it’s the perfect rail.
I have three. They weigh next to nothing and feel great. They all attached to the barrel nut just fine with no movement and none of them are broken. I wouldn’t overthink it. If you torque the crap out of it you might damage the threaded collar but you’d have to really be twisting that sucker. I used blue Loctite and moderate force, no problems.
I just put a 15" trx rail on my gun and love it. I actually saved 14oz over the factory short quadrail. Haven’t shot with it yet, but love the feel and look so far. Really cleans things up IMO.

have any of you had problems with the two two bolt lockup under the rail? troy released the alpha rail and said that they were getting complaints of failures with the two bolts that lock up the rail to the barrel nut.
also look into the troy alpha battle rail. it is the updated version of the trx with a better lock up system and it uses the stock barrel nut. they are also cheaper than the trx right now.
I have a 13" on a lmt upper and i’m in love with it so far. Its light and strong and not having rails where you don’t need them is a huge plus for me. I haven’t had any problems as far as installation. My one and only complaint is when you mount a rail directly beneath the gas block you may have contact with the back plate even with the troy lp gas block. Oh and make sure you use a locking compound such as blue loctite on the screws for the rail sections.
will the trx work with a shaved FSB?
Yep. I have an 11 inch TRX on a carbine length SBR with cut down FSB.
Same as ArmaGlock…I just posted a thread on the 11.5" I just built.
I used the FSB it came with and shaved it down, be sure to really contour it around the gas tube though or its a little big to fit

I think it is a great rail, but if I were to do it again I’d buy the VTAC extreme version instead with its cut slots instead of holes; would be a bit less ‘cheese grater’ like.
I have multiple samples of both. I actually prefer the Troy version for the lighter weight and the greater number of accessories available for the holes vs. the slots. I typically shoot with gloves, but have shot both bare-handed and didn’t notice the handguards at all while shooting.

Rob, has heat ever been an issue w/o gloves? I’m considering one of these for a future build and I wonder how hot these get. Thanks.
I have heated them up to the point that I can’t hold them. This was a VTAC version on a 14.5" govt profile BCM barrel, shooting a steel dueling tree and other steel essentially at will for several magazines. Run the steel, run the steel, run the steel, reload as needed, run the steel, etc.
would a VG or AVG help with no gloves and heat?
