YHM 20" barrel 3" groups @ 50 yards

Hello to all ,
I just installed a Yankee Hill manufacturing 20" Threaded, Fluted, Melonte QPQ barrel 1/9 twist (YHM-79-TF)
I went to zero and noticed I was obtaining 3 to 4 inch groups at 50 yards and you can imagine the groups I got at 100 yards.
I took the compensator off I also remounted the free float rail and came back with same results .

The ammo I am using is federal TRU 55gr Sierra Gameking BTHP
And Wolf gold 55gr FMJ.

With this ammo and rifle except a DPMS mid-weight 20" barrel 1/9 twist CL , I was able to get 1-1.5 inch groups at 100 and hit constantly a small propane tank at 400 yards with ease.

My rifle is a SPR type A2 stock Stag lower / upper, vortex 4-16x50 scope with LaRue QD mount, I shoot prone with bipod and sandbag in the rear stock.

Could this be user error or manufacturing error thank you for your responses.

A friend bought a rifle with one of those barrels on it, and his was worse than yours. Six different people, all who can sboot, tried it with just about as many different ammo brands, types.
All the same.
Finally got some good light down the bore, looked like the rifling broach had been drug through twice, slightly off from each other.
Got a different barrel, rifle was fine. New barrel was made by someone else.

I’ll contact YHM on Monday hope they can exchange it or get my $$ back, I’ll see what the options are.
Thank you

Yeah, that’s bad grouping. Checked everything was snug, barrel, scope and mount?

The only thing I can think of beside it being a bad barrel is to re-torque the barrel nut

It’s a hassle, but it might be worth a try.

PLUS 1,… And please, keep us posted as to what happens with this… Interested in the out come of both your retry… and if that doesn’t
work, what YHM does for you…?

I replaced the barrel nut with a BCM one and was torqued to 80 ft lbs.
Went out to test, best group with YHM @50 yards was 2 1/2".
I also shot a 20" A2 DPMS barrel pinned front sight magpul hand guards same scope same lower with my cheapest ammo Wolf Gold and got a 3/4" group but did have one flyer.

Called YHM and sent barrel back ( at my own expense, YHM will only refund my shipping cost if they find an issue with manufacturing ) the rep said they would air gauge or something of that nature. He also told me I had to shoot 68gr match ammo, I told him The reason I bought a 1/9 twist barrel was to shoot 55 grain. So we shall see what happens.

That YHM rep sounds like a pencil pusher and has absolutely no idea what he is talking about…good luck, hope it works out!

Yeah something is wrong with that upper, and YHM’s response makes no sense. I have a 16" YHM 1 in 7 upper that groups just under an inch at 50 meters (both 77gr and 62gr), and my marksmanship is nothing special. I haven’t bench-fired 55gr in that weapon (don’t keep much of it around), but I don’t expect any difference. It’s a very consistent, satisfactorily accurate upper, but it’s heavy and I paid too much for it.

Hi, just wanted to give an update.
Got a call Friday from YHM saying they are refunding full amount plus shipping, I asked what was wrong with the barrel and the rep said he didn’t work in that department BUT if they are refunding full amount w/ shipping there was a manufacture defect. So I wrenched on my old DPMS 20" and went to the range.
Groups @ 100 meters (108 degrees) Federal Gameking 55gr BTHP just under 1", m855 1.5", 69gr reloads 1.25", wolf gold 2".

Just an FYI. There are a lot of good barrels out there. Stay away from trash vendors and get a good one and you be much better off.

Nice to hear YHM made good on the deal.
