Although it’s possible the offerings may change, to keep the price down there’s no mix-n-match. So which way to go?
(a) this one probably fits the hand a lot nicer, and no need to cover a bunch of rails I don’t need, but
(b) on this one I can mount my BUIS on the GB. I don’t have a Troy front, yet. Would mounting it all the way fore leave room to fold back?
Note: I don’t have the resources to buy the barrel and build it up myself…maybe in a few years.
Tim with Titan wanted to bring an inexpensive 6.8 to market because of the void left by Kotonics, I just helped make that happen.
The MK68 and AR1 are my products.
Yeah, I didn’t pick the name, it will fill the void. We had over 100 sign up in 4 days starting after Thanksgiving, I think we just passed 200.
We actually have a good team working toward the same goal on the 6.8, the guys on 68forums working on rifles and SSA working on bringing the best ammo to the market. Hopefully some of the troops will benefit from it at some point.
I just need to finish the machining on the AR1 and let some of the 10th group test it.
Tim and Harrison have mentioned that the upper might be available w/o handguards, so you could install whatever you want. I know what you mean about the YHM quad rail. It wouldn’t be my first choice, but a Larue or DD is much more $. There’s no way they could build these uppers for $600 with those quad rails. The YHM tube and YHM rail just give us options as buyers.
You could just use the tube and mount your sight on the tube. Not ideal, but how often will you use it? Is it for show, hunting, targets? If its a duty rifle, it would seem that a DD or Larue rail with backup sight on the GB would be the way to go. I wouldn’t cut any corners for that type of application, but for playing around at the range the tube would seem fine.
I’ll probably get the tube. I most likely won’t use BUIS on this upper. The tube is lighter in weight than just about everything else and I really don’t want the bulkiness of rails with covers. My upper will be used for hunting and targets.
I think I fit their buyer market to a T, if I understand the offering correctly: 6.8spc in the ideal twist/chambering, top-notch chrome lining in an ideal profile.
Somewhat like Noveske’s N4.
Except this one is a complete upper for $599. Based on what I’ve read about both builders, I feel confident the parts will be solid, and the build will be straight. And for my uses, I’m betting either YHM will be superior to plastic HG.
So, back to the OP, whether to choose the tube/lo-pro OR 4-rail/railed GB.
I plan to shoot ACTS (local tactical competition), hunt, and pass it down to my children: so it’s a heritage piece as well. (ETA: will also serve as SHTF/home defense if necessary.) Same as the N4 I hope to receive soon. Of course I can swap a rail and add a FSC later, but the key is starting out right with limited funds. Either way I’d put a Troy front BUIS on it, and add a quality optic when I can afford it. That means my hunting will be limited to +/- 150 yards, but that’s fine with me.
My main concern is the quality of the customizable tube to hold zero with the Troy. If you pros say it’s good to 300 yards with <1 MOA change (say, between plastic and Larue), that’s a good as I’ll probably be able to shoot for several years…by which time I’ll have an optic, and the Troy will revert to BUIS duty. So I’m trying to be realistic about my abilities and budget, and hoping for no-nonsense advice.
if you attach a sight to the tube and bump the tube hard you could loose your Z.
If you use a flip up front site/GB you are less likely to lose your zero.
I recently saw YHM’s new hand guard and was actually impressed with how much they upped the quality. They have T-marks now, and the top rail is bridged to the upper. It also felt significantly lighter, but I can’t say I’ve held any other YHM hand guard in about three years.
I still prefer Daniel Defense, Midwest, KAC, etcetera, but it looked like a decent product for a little over a bill.
Thanks. I think I’ll go with the railed gas block, since I’ll be depending solely on the BUIS for a while.
Looking at the pic linked above, what BUIS should I get? Who makes the best front flip which is tall enough for that GB, but will still have adequate clearance from the rail to fold down?
