Attached is an enlarged copy of an original TeleType announcing VJ Day to the ship, USS Edgecomb, 6-days after the 2nd atomic bomb was dropped. I received it from the estate of a close father-figure, Jim, who recently passed away. He served in Navy at the end of WW2 in communications, which is probably how he acquired this document.
In the 50+ years of knowing Jim, he never talked about the war other than a miserable nonstop train ride in a packed railcar from the east coast to the west coast.
Reading you can see that even in war, the US had a good sense of humor… (“…friendly fashion…”) but I’m sure that was a sarcastically serious statement.
Memorial Day is a time to realize the countless sacrifices made in order for victory messages like these to have been sent throughout America’s history.
Jim was a good man and I thank him for having saved this.
