Here is the meaning
The 2 Hellenic words that have endured for almost 3000 years. They signify and characterize both the heart and birth the Western European Hunter Gatherer Spirit. From the Ancient Greek, it was the battlecry of the Spartan King Leonidas to the Persian Emperor Xerxes, who came with 500,000 of his troops to conquer and invade Hellas, which was the epicenter, and is the birthplace of Western Civilization. Xerxes brazenly made a Turkish offer to spare the lives of Leonidas and 299 of his most loyal guards, supremely disciplined warriors who were trained from the beginning of birth to be the elite soldiers of Hellas and the fiercest fighters in the ancient world, if they would surrender their arms, Leonidas gallantly replied to him: ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒE
The Battle of Thermopylae ensued between the 300 Spartans and the invaders. Each Hellenic warrior fighting gloriously until the last. They were later avenged by the city state of Athens who vowed they would not die in vain
When translated it loosely means, “Come and get them!” These words live on today as the most recognized quote in western military history. They are the classically timeless example of bravery, courage, valor, and unyielding determination in face of overwhelming odds, In modern day Thermopylae, Hellas there lies a plaque in memory of these eternal warriors that reads.
I was going to say “come and get them” but I thought it may have been also something like “over my dead body.” that is also fitting but i didn’t think the words actually meant that so…
Μολὼν λαβέ is normally translated into English as, “Come and take them” or “Come and get them,” referring to the weapons of the 300 Spartans who stood at the Hot Gate at Thermopylae. When their leader, King Leonidas, was given the opportunity to surrender by turning over their weapons, that was his response.
It is sometimes more roughly translated as “over my dead body” because the Greek term actually has a more fatalistic sense to it … a more descriptive translation might be “when you come, you will take them.” It signified that Leonidas and his Spartans knew their battle would end in their deaths, but they remained to guard the pass nonetheless to give the rest of Greece time to organize a cohesive fighting force. It was less a challenge than a statement of fact, that the Spartans would stand and fight to the death.
That is the way I understand the words. No glory was sought by the Spartans, they just lived up to their own expectations.
It will be a sad day when citizens of this country decide that enough is enough. I pray that we are not all lulled into impotency in the mean time.
I still have hope for the ideals of our founding fathers but am loosing faith in the general populace.
Maybe there will be an awakening, I hate the prospect of my children and grand children having to make the decision even more than I hate the prospect of it myself.
I will continue to fight for what I believe in…
