I have two MAK-90s with the thumbhole stocks that I want to add the traditional wood stock sets to. After researching this, it seems that Ironwood Designs is the way to go. My question is, what choice in wood, and what method of finishing the wood do you recommend? Since I have two, was thinking of doing one in a lighter color, one in a darker. Also, it seems the Tapco trigger set is the most common additional US parts to add to make it compliant, agree? Thanks for the input.
De-nuetered mine with an Ironwood stock set. Can’t remember what wood it was. I used RIT dyes to get the Chinese orange/yellow color. Went with the fat checkered pistol grip also, it’s my most comfortable AK pistol grip. It unfortunately has the tapco FCG in it. Nothing wrong with that set as I put them in all my AK’s, but the original Chinese FCG is the smoothest out there for an AK.
Looks nice. What did you do for threading the barrel and adding bayonet lug?
Some guy on the AKforum was making and selling the brakes, but that was about 2 years ago. I just ran a die down over the end of the barrel and rethreaded it, I had about half my threads there already. For the bayo lug on the GB and rod holder on the FSB, I bought a cheap FSB and GB from something else, cant remember which type of AK, but it was only like $30. I cut off the parts I needed and welded them on my existing parts. Original un-nuetered Chinese FSB’s and GB’s were too costly for me.
steelblitz nice mak, agreed also on the thicker ak pistol grip it is much more comfortable. and the chinese fcg one of the smoothest ive ever shot. picked up my fs on gunbroker its nos chinese chu wood with the relieve cut for under folder bayo, which i wish i had:(
