One of the Mods here brought it to my attention that a member here is having similar problems with primers that I, and several other reloaders have experienced.
Here’s link to a TOS thread that a guy from AZ started on the subject.
Basically… don’t mix current production WOLF primers with H335 or the Mil pull down equivalant ball powder. It won’t hurt you, but the primers suck at igniting the powder, Jethro.
I’ve been using 'Small Rifle - .223 REM" Lot 9-09. I have a couple thousand more that are Lot 10-09 but I haven’t used any yet. I load with 25.5gr of H335.
Yesterday I shot 60 rounds and got 6 failures and a number of hang fires.
I’ve had awesome luck with Wolf primers before and am hoping this was just a bad lot…
From the reports many of the posters are having problems with Small Rifle MAGNUM primers, which seems doubly strange since I would think those should be more able to light off ball powder, not less.
And yes it seems to be associated with H335, WC844 (and maybe a couple with AA2230??)
This sucks because I just got 2K Wolf SRM. I’m planning on loading some up with my light plinking load - 55 fmjbt / 24.0 AA2230 - and see how the Wolf SRM’s do. Unfortunately for me I live in IL and outside activities (except snowmobiles) take a back seat this time of year.
They’re not long hang fires… but they are a TRIP! It’s beyond weird being able to feel the hammer drop and click… and then the round goes off.
I’ve got hundreds of rounds down range now with the primers and various non-H335 powders. So I’m pretty relieved that I’ll be able to use the rest of my stash without problems.
Again thanks for posting this up–I use a lot of H335 and the pull down equivalent (for practice and such), and save the VV for match grade loads…I was just looking at maybe getting some SRM primers as I am drawing down on my 7-1/2’s—I’m going to play it safe…-It does suck for everyone that had loaded a bunch with powders the primer doesn’t like:eek:
I’ve had trouble with Wolf Sm Rifle (223) primers igniting Lil’Gun powder in the 450 Bushmaster. CCI worked fine and many recommend using Mag primers in the 450? I’ve had some misfires with Wolf pistol primers too!! Would not trust my life with Wolf!
Here is my experience with Wolf SRM Primers from another board. Also, somebody asked why special primers for 223. Slam fires. CCI 41 primers are also for this reason.

Went out and fired just about all of them and they all fired fine.
The other day I was shooting some loads over the chronograph. Lake City Brass, CCI 41 primer, 23 grains Reloader 10x and a mill surplus 55 grain FMJ (I consider this a very good bullet, all measurements are very consistent). Average velocity 2880 fps (I thought it would be a little higher than that). Then I noticed I still had about a dozen of the test loads with the Wolf Small Rifle Magnum primers, 22 grains of Reloader 10x, a Midway bulk 55 grain FMJ in some mixed brass. Surprise, surprise, these average 2928 fps. Man was I scratching my head and still am. Loaded up another 400 of the Wolf special in Lake City brass today . Will go out and shoot a bunch of them on Monday, for function and over the chronograph. Will report back.
Latest post:
Function test: No Problems, all primers fired. Chronograph test, could not duplicate the 2900 fps that I averaged on the run mentioned above, so I am thinking that the rounds I thought were Wolf primed 22 grains of Reloader 10x were actually something else. Anyway, this time with 22 grains of Reloader 10x and wolf primers I was only getting an average of 2755 but the standard deviation was only 20, so the primers appear to be consistence. There were way too many variables in this testing so I am starting over. I will load 25 rounds each of CCI 41 and Wolf SRM primers, measuring each powder charge, checking each bullet weight and using matched brass. I will shoot them over the chronograph and see how they compare. At present I am thinking any problems with this lot of Wolf SRM primers (or Wolf SRM primer is general) is restricted to certain powders.
Also, I have loaded and fired thousands of wolf SP primers over the last eight months with no failures of any kind.
Using wc844 with wolf 223 primers I had a squib, luckily I caught it before launching another down the pipe. I also had some hang fires, and a bunch of duds. Upon dissection of the duds, the primer burned and there was clumps of partially burnt powder at the bottom of the rounds.
I pulled all 2000 that I loaded up and switched the powder to TAC. No problems yet.
I also tried some tula 223 primers with the wc844. No problems so far after a couple hundred.
